Not this Doper. Go Bulls! Pax, you don’t make something of this #1 pick – preferably a trade, we’re young enough-- and you can go join your brother on the golf course!
I think the image the MSM has of the NBA has dampened enthusiasm for this great sport among those who, shall we say, are susceptible to Jedi mind tricks. That, and the fact that the referees flat out suck wild goat testes.
What he said. I want the asteroid to win. If I have to pick, I’ll take the Celtics, but I’ll change that when they become very obnoxious jerks about it afterwards.
Hijack. The above is a myth, IMHO. While the Bulls, NIKE and NBA Properties prospered under Jordan, the quality of play of the rest of league declined. Having devoted all league promotions to one person. the league was stuck praying for a replacement savior.
I love the game of basketball, but I despise the kind of game that the NBA tries to create: a non-stop slam-dunk contest for superstars. And beyond the fact that the referees are told to not call traveling and give superstars the benefit of the doubt, I’m driven away by the way that the league doesn’t seem to care about just plain bad or biased refereeing.
So I watch games, but not as often as I would if the league cared about the game, instead of the spectacle.
I really don’t care for basketball. Mostly because I never played it growing up. Also, as has been noted above there is too much scoring. Further, in the games that I have tried to watch, the last two minutes can take an hour as it is usually, move the ball, take a couple free throws, repeat. Hell, AFAIC, the entire game could be played in two minutes by giving the home team a score of 1 and the visitors 0.
As I have said, I am not a fan. Now NASCAR, and some baseball, I am there. I even like hockey when I am at the game.
You should really try watching the Finals then. The Lakers are more team-oriented than you’d think given that they have the biggest superstar in the league, and the Celtics are literally unselfish to a fault – they make the extra pass even when they should be hoisting up a shot instead. In general, actually, there doesn’t seem to be nearly as much of the style you describe as there was just a few years ago. Teams are passing the ball again. The good ones are, anyway.
And next year, be sure to catch a few Hornets games. Chris Paul is the best Point Guard on the planet, and the best passer in a generation. I really enjoyed pulling for New Orleans these playoffs.
I’m in the same boat. I’m just not quite a big enough basketball fan to follow the NBA when the Knicks suck. However, I do like to watch the playoffs every year. I can have floating allegiances (this year it’s the Celtics in the East and, like I said, the Hornets in the West), and this way when the Knicks finally become relevant again I’ll have some idea what’s going on in the sport.
And it’s a standard response for a good reason. It’s June - time to be outside, doing all that fun stuff we couldn’t do back in February because it was too damned cold. Hell, May was also that time.
It’s a fine time for playing basketball on playgrounds. It’s a fine time for watching baseball at outdoor ballparks. It’s really an incredibly stupid time for watching basketball in indoor arenas.
I’ve got nothing against the NBA. But they’ll just have to go on without me. I can’t see following an indoor game at an outdoor time of year.
During the 80s I was a huge fan of basketball. Or so I thought. I’d listen to the game broadcasts most every night, after finishing my homework, and loved hearing the court action, and who was dibble-dabbling with the ball. Then I left the Boston area, and tried to listen to other basketball broadcasts, or even watch the game. And I came to realize I was a Johnny Most fan, not a basketball fan. And without him, it’s just no fun.
I can and will watch most any televised professional sport. Football, Baseball, Tennis, Nascar, Hockey, Golf, etc. Especially when it comes to playoffs and finals.
Basketball however tries my patience. The first 3 quarters are pretty much unnecessary to watch since they keep neck and neck for the most part. And then when it comes to the last 1:30 of the game they painfully stretch it out for a half hour with foul, foul, foul, timeout, foul, foul, timeout, foul, foul, timeout. Lately I don’t even bother to watch but catch the highlights and final score after it’s over.
For a fast paced high intensity game they sure hit the brakes on the excitement at the end.
I too am in the “Loved basketball in the 80’s, the NBA has slowly killed the game” camp. There’s major officiating issues in the NBA, the players are overhyped jerks and there’s only more flopping done in Euro soccer games. Basketball died in my mind the day Magic went away.
http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/ Curt Shilling got up close during the basketball finals and left feeling Kobe is bad team mate and a prick. Explains a lot.
