It’s a cover of Van Morrison’s Gloria with a few lines from Patti Smith’s poem Oath added.

Gloria (nitpick: it was written by Van Morrison, but first recorded by his band Them) actually is one of rock’s most covered songs. It’s a garage rock classic, which I’ve always found quite ironic, given the fact that Van’s later solo output is anything but garage-like.

The Carpenters’ “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” (Youtube here) was a cover of the same song, written and recorded by Klaatu on the 3:47 EST album (Youtube here).

When they were together, Klaatu never sold many records, but they got a LOT of publicity, because rumors abounded that they were really the Beatles, who had secretly re-formed.

Sparky812, “All The Young Dudes” as done by Mott The Hoople was written by David Bowie.

I only included the reference as some background on Ian Hunter, I did not claim he wrote it or that it was a cover.
I remember back in early 90s Bruce Dickinson covered ATYD on his Tattooed Millionaire solo album.
