“. . . [T]he Treasurer [of Lincoln’s Inn] (unwarned, and so somewhat taken aback) duly obeyed the customary order of the junior bencher, given in a peremptory tone at a suitable period after dinner, to “Ring the bell”; after the butler has appeared and the Treasurer has asked the junior what he wants, the junior replies with a loud “Port”. This is said to demonstrate the basic equality amongst benchers, as well as the pre-eminence of port.”
Got my paperwork today, getting sworn in tomorrow before morning court. I think my court partner is happier than I am at this point, since she can now leave me alone in the courtroom! I have a feeling I’ll be spending a lot of time alone in court now…
One day of being sworn in, and the rest of your career to be sworn at.
In case you did not know it already, always be suspicious of the partner who hands you a file and asks you to simply appear at a routine status call for him/her. “It’s just a routine status call - you won’t have to do anything or know anything about the merits.”
Yeah - right!
This is no joke. My feeling is that I create enough chances to look like a clueless dumb-ass before the judge all on my own, without an assist from colleagues. Always make time to read the file.
Just remember, the judge is no better than you, and you don’t need to take no lip off of them. Generally they reward spunk with favorable determinations.
And yes, you can use your major credit cards for bail!
