My post is going to sort of complaining about waiting in line, but I’ll keep it nice so the thread doesn’t get moved.
I stopped at a Royal Farm Store (like a 7-11) the other night to get a loaf of bread. There were a lot of employees there…well, a lot for a RFS, about 5 or 6. Usually there are only 2 or 3 at most.
Anyway, I grabbed my bread and got in line behind a woman buying 3 bags of butterscotch candies, 2 for $1.00. Her total was $1.53. She handed the cashier an “Independence” card, which is some sort of welfare/public assistance thing. I’m not sure how it works, but I think it’s like a debit card, with a certain amount of money she can spend each month on certain food items.
The card wouldn’t work, so the cashier called over the manager. It ended up with 5 RFS employees standing there trying to get this woman’s card to work, but I got the impression it either was out of money or she couldn’t buy candy with it.
While this was going on, more people got in line, and NO ONE thought to open up another line. Would that have made too much sense? Jeez, it ended up with at least 8 people behind me, complaining about the wait, one guy made a snotty comment about “welfare people”, the employees were arguing with this woman about why her card wouldn’t work, she was yelling that they better “make” it work…very crazy scene. This woman got a little out of hand and the manager kept threatening to call the police if she didn’t stop.
A couple people left, including me. I threw the bread on the counter and went to the 7-11 down the street. If they had at least opened up the other register and gotten everyone else out of there, it wouldn’t have been so crazy.
I have. I spent one day filling out applications to about three or four different stores. I did everything by the book. I asked to speak to the manager, I dressed neatly, etc. I was told each time that they were going to interview later that week. So far, I’ve gotten two nice, polite “don’t-call-us-we’ll-call-you” postcards. And all these stores had huge banners advertising “Help Wanted” and “Hiring Bonus Paid”.
I must be overqualified to stand behind a register.
I’ll admit that folks have been mostly polite in this thread, but since my last post here, there’s been nothing but complaining of various sorts, with nary a factual post in sight. This thread doesn’t really belong here, so I’m moving it to the Pit.
Neutron, you’re a “Gen Xer” I think c_goat was talking about the current generation, “Generation Y”. These kids have the largest disposable income ever in history. Where do the little girls who get the money to buy every Backstreet Boys and N’sync album get it from? Their parents. How could these bands rise to number one on the charts otherwise? Most of these kids don’t have jobs. Wal-Mart used to have a task force of teenagers trying to save money for their cars, CD’s, food, et cetera. Now they are in dire need of employees because Mommy and Daddy provide everything for their kids, rather than letting them work for it. Call it a generalization, but I call it as I see it.
Funny…I find the “young kids” I work with are sometimes a lot nicer than the older coworkers, who seem resentful of us students because “we get an easier schedule.” Yeah, you wanna take my finals for me?
Sorry, not me. She had money; she had paid for her cigarettes and gallon-size Big Gulp of Coke with cash…she just wanted to pay for the candy with her Independence card.
I know that’s a really snotty attitude to have, but hey, I WORK for my money. I went through a real tight time when I was getting divorced and was a single parent, and I had to do things like give up the cigarettes that I couldn’t afford.
