There was no extra cost (nor monthly subscription) for this; it was included in the price of the device itself. It wouldn’t have been much by modern standards, since downloading ebooks takes a very limited amount of data compared to many of the things that people use tablets for, like browsing the internet or social media

The original Kindle keyboard models did have the ability to browse the web on their free 2G/3G service. I knew of one person on a different forum at the time where the Kindle was their only Internet access.
