Walking around a magentic pole with a magnetic compass.

So what would I see if I walked around the North Magnetic Pole with a magnetic compass (or the antipodal–the South Magnetic Pole)?

  1. The needle spinning randomly à la Bermuda Triangle?

or

  1. Walking around, yards away, the magnetic compass needle tracks the poles location.

or

  1. Most likely, the needle points close, if not downright perpendicular, to the earth, and for tracking to occur (i. e., 2) to occur you need to be miles and miles away; hardly worth the labor unless your are flying around the pole.

or

  1. You discover a hole leading to the hollow earth filled with escaped Nazis or a popular Thetan vacation spot.

So, which is it?

Option three - you can actually use a sensitive enough magnet to estimate latitude, based on the dip of the magnet towards the interior of the earth Magnetic dip - Wikipedia
