Thanks for this. I didn’t realize some of these were banned.
I’d have a certain morbid interest in seeing a list of essentially non-troll posters who attracted a lot of attention on their way to being banned–I’m thinking of people like smashthestate (probably the most fascinating poster we’ve had who absolutely needed to go) and cesario (who I am infinitely glad to see gone, but who also demonstrated very eloquently how inappropriate one could be while still staying firmly within the rules almost all of the time). I realize this isn’t practical on any established basis, but it is interesting to muse about.
I don’t remember what my total was, but when I was actively banning people on a regular basis, I remember banning one person with 26 names in one day. Yes, one name for every letter of the alphabet. And he wasn’t the only person I banned on that day, either. I know that a few idjits had more than a hundred socks, and I’d wager that yes indeed, at least a few had over a thousand.
Some people need a hobby. Well, they need a DIFFERENT hobby.
I don’t think a formal list is a good idea, but if one wanted to create a stickied thread in the BBQ Pit where Dopers can post links to memorable train-wreck threads, that might be fun (in a morbidly fascinating way).
But you do notify us of banning long-term members. Why do that if it’s so bad to draw attention to them?
Maybe a stickied list of banning threads would serve a purpose. Only include the ones that were important enough to have a thread.
When zombie threads arise, and I see people who were banned after 10,000 posts, I often want to lnow why. I can find the reason if I search, but a list in one place would be a time saver.
This has been a problem for Wikipedia. Qatar routes basically everyone through one or two IPs, as does Gibraltar. Then there are plenty of places with only one or two ISPs.
The attention thing really only applied to trolls, because they are the ones who are posting for attention. Banning for violating other rules is less a concern, and most of the long-term members are not banned for trolling.
Notification is basically to offset the swarm of questions that will inevitably arise if a long-term/well-known poster is suddenly banned.
