List of the Banned

There seems to be a pile of Bannings of posters going on. Is there a list anyplace?

When a long-time member is banned, there’s generally a post in ATMB (where this thread will be moved shortly) explaining why. When someone new is banned, the most common explanation is that it’s either a sock or a spammer, and in either case, no explanation is offered. In any event, I don’t think there’s a master list publicly available of everyone who’s been banned, nor do I see any value in such. If you really wanted, you could do a search for thread titles in ATMB containing “has been banned”.

Moving to ATMB from GQ.

Someone with Moderator access could easily do it but they probably won’t. There have been thousands of them, the majority of which were one off spammers or socks.

To confirm what Chronos has said, no, there is no publicly available list of banned posters.

Correct. The only two bannings that have been announced that way this year were mswas in February and ivan astikov last week. Xploder was banned in March and the ban was discussed in an active thread, but no separate announcement was posted. Cesario was also banned in February. There was no announcement thread but there was much, much public discussion before and after. I don’t think this is an unusual level of activity by historic standards.

Search also turns up threads about the bannings of Joanie, Silverstreak Wonder, and Jimmy Joe Meager. We’ve banned some other short-term users like Egmond Codfried and Mister Obvious and bullrun. No announcements were posted there, as usual, because they were only around for a few days or a couple of weeks.

Great name for a pop group though! :stuck_out_tongue:

I noticed a few had banned under their names. I think the banning with proper reasoning should be in "about this message board’. It is the board death penalty after all.

Is banning a sock really a “death penalty” though? That’s what 90% (my WAG) of the bannings are.

“I’m with the Banned”

In the case of someone who gets banned and comes back, it’s enforcing a decision we’d already made. I don’t know how many sock bannings we typically get. For one thing it depends on whether that Nostradamus guy is on his medication or off it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Joanie did get banned after we discovered he was posting with two accounts at the same time. Jimmy Joe Meager got banned for the same thing. Neither of them had been banned from the SDMB prior to that.

The overwhelming majority of bannings are for spammers, though.

Really, we want to provide people who have been banned with as little attention as possible, even negative attention. Trolls in particular would be delighted to have their names memorialized in a permanent list. So it isn’t going to happen.

You could even call it a “Banned Name!”

:d&r:

Who was the first “major” poster to get banned? Satan was pretty early on, so was M… Mmmm… oh, crap. Who was the lawyer whose meltdown led to threats of a suit? I think the name was edible. Handy went shortly after 10K posts was an outrageous concept.

Would a greatest banned posters thread be kosher?

Melin was probably the first big name to be banned. That was before my time. The next was Satan which was just barely before my time but people were still talking about it when I signed up.

Speaking as an MPSIMS mod (that being a likely place for such a thread) – seems like a bad idea to me. One of the reasons we discourage talking about bannees after their departure is that they can’t respond if it turns into a pile-on, and the thread you suggest seems ripe for that kind of nastiness. (“Yeah, you think he was a jerk? soandso was a real asshole!”) Some of these people are long-gone – others, not so much.

Melin–thanks!

I agree that a general free-for-all would be a bad idea. I was thinking about more of a trivia-like thread (though your point would still stand that it would devolve). Some of the Board’s fabric is made up of the three above mentions, and there are a few others who had an impact on the character and nature of the board (some good, some not-so-much). Anyone know if there is a poster with a smaller post-to-influence ratio than The Grapist?

I would give Contestant#3 the “honor” of first “big name.” (He was also the first to have his banning reversed.) There were a lot of “names” prior to Melin. Then, there were posters such as Phaedrus who just phaeded away after much controversy.

I cannot think what a list would provide except to resurrect squabbles over whether any particular bannee was treated unfairly. Enough of the board has been archived that we cannot even link back to examples of bad behavior from the early days.

Everyone is free to maintain their own lists of banned posters–just don’t post the list on the board.

It might seem like there are lot more banned posters lately because of all the re-opened zombie threads. There always seem to be many banned posters in those.

It is true that some of the recent banshees were right wingers who were very impolite. But that is not enough to ban them. I just wonder what was the last straw. Some were practically begging to get banned.
