Walter Rudin, 1921-2010

This week has not been good for mathematicians. Walter Rudin, whose name is known to analysis students everywhere, is dead at 89. For those of you not fortunate enough to study from his books, he set the standard for elegance and terseness in mathematical exposition. Struggling through his works is a rite of passage for young mathematicians, which we all come to appreciate later. Godspeed, Prof. Rudin.
