The finance guy who bought the (bankrupt) Hostess operation has it leveraged to the hilt-he needs to make big profits to pay the note-and that is why he’s using the cheapest ingredients possible.
I would guess that it is not a trend to produce a healthier product. While I am sure Twinkies and Ding Dongs could be made healthier, it occurs to me that if I pick up a thing of Ding Dongs, I am NOT seeking a healthier dining alternative… pay attention to your market!
That being said, I don’t think I’ve eaten a Hostess product in a decade or more. This thread does not particularly tempt me to try any.

I have to agree. Hostess stuff is OK these days, but really it’s no better than Ms. Freshley’s or the 7-11 house brand or any other knock-off versions.
Does anybody know if they’re usuing the same bakeries as before, or if they switch to different (presumably cheaper) bakeries after the bankruptcy?
I hear ya about those cupcakes. I had one this weekend and it felt greasy. And it left an oily residue on my fingers. Tasted like sawdust too.
Vachon has also gone down the crapper. Ah Caramels used to be deeelicious and now they taste like nothing. Same with Jos. Louis and Flakies. I might as well eat cardboard.
I suppose it’s a good thing, keeps me from eating that type of junk food…

The news has been kind of weird about this, so I hesitate to cite sources, but I believe that a lot of American bakeries have been bought out by a Mexican factory known for cheap snack foods, called “Bimbo.” Some of the bakeries that I think have been more or less absorbed are Entemenns (they really stink now), Sara Lee, Hostess, and Orowheat/Brownberry.
