Senior builder Dave Specha calls it a “dream job.” He says it requires creativity and a childlike imagination.
“They definitely have to be basically still a Lego kid at heart,” he said. “They really do have to have an ability to work with kids and work with the people who visit our center; really be creative and have an artist’s eye and a touch.”
Applicants must submit their résumés and a one-minute YouTube video showing their qualifications. All applicants must be 18 or older.
Funny you should mention this: I just watched a National Geographic special about Lego’s manufacturing and distribution process and part of it was following a British guy who’d just been hired to the design team out of university.
He wrote the company a letter when he was 12 asking how he could become a Lego designer, and they wrote back and told to get degrees in product design and art and design. So he did, and they gave him a job.
I have always been very impressed with the Lego company. Not just because they put out a high quality product, but they seem to be good people to work for and merge creativity with engineering almost effortlessly it seems. Clearly they spark creativity in many of their customers.
That having been said, Legoland, while closely affiliated with the Lego group, is actually a different company. Getting this job would not get you a job at Lego, but at Merlin Entertainments Group. They operate the Legoland theme parks and discovery centers. As with most things Lego, the brand is tightly integrated because they don’t want people having a bad experience with anything that says Lego on it, so there is a lot of crossover, but the master builders who design the new Lego sets which go out to stores and help design new product lines like Bionicles, etc. those are Lego employees, not Legoland. So if you’re wanting to build cool stuff that people will enjoy in their trip to Legoland, like our local Legoland Master Builder then this is the job for you. If you want to be one of the engineers who designs the things these guys build things out of, then you have to go work for Lego itself.
