I am tired of the same old music. I would like someone knowledgable to refer me to some different music.
Preferably from years and years ago, sortof funky, different, eclectic, with a good beat.
Any suggestions will be looked into.
It’d help if I knew what “the same old music” might be. I mean - Jethro Tull is from years and years ago, sort of funky sometimes, certainly eclectic, but is it different?
Thick as a Brick, Songs From the Wood, Aqualung (aside from the title track - it’s not different).
Different from what they are playing on radio stations now. Something I probably had never heard before.
Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, Parliament - all old funk bands.
Wild T and The Spirit
Prince (some of his best albums are the Love Symbol album with “Sexy M.F.” and “Wanna Melt With U” on it, “Diamonds and Pearls” and “Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic” - this is one of the best albums ever, period.)
Prozzak
The Police (they started life as a reggae/ska band)
Terence Trent D’Arby
Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Colin James
Jeff Healy
Eric Clapton
Try Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions or Musicquarium (sp?). If you feel more ambitious try Os Mutantes or maybe Ozric tentacles.
I just discovered Danko Jones and I really like it. You’ll have to be more specific about what you’re looking for to get better advice though.
I know. I was trying, but its like I will know it when I hear it.
Something that was never way popular but just sounds good, risque for its time, different.
Shuggie Otis
Might help if you told us what stuff you like. Here’s some random crap that I like, though:
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
The Specials
The Pogues
The Beta Band
Butthole Surfers
Captain Beefheart
Smog
Kirsty MacColl
Maybe. I’m not looking for duplicates of what i like though.
Ramones, Cheap Trick, some country, Grateful Dead, Kelly Clarkson…
I cry, I cry. A goddess lost too soon. Gonna throw on Kite (and the interview Equipoise and I taped with her) and bawl.
Dude, the more you specify what you’re looking for, the more what you’re really saying is SHUGGIE OTIS. Serious. Do yourself a favor.
I am impressed by your opinion. I will go to the library tomorrow and see if they have him (him?).
I am no dude.
From wiki:
Well, they gots him at my liberry. Look at your library’s catalog online, and request it, that way if they don’t have it at your branch they’ll get it for you. Way easier; whenever I go t’the liberry, they’s a stack o’discuses waitin for me. One stop shopping.
Shuggie sings the blues 1994. Its on hold.
Hmm. Never heard his now stuff. His 30-years-ago stuff is horrifically essential. Find Inspiration Information.
This means Shonen Knife. Get an early album.
They only listed 3 titles, only one of which was totally his.
For me it’s Fairytale in New York. God, I didn’t used to think that song could get any sadder.
I don’t mean to be a prick, and I know you said you wanted music from years and years ago, but I just don’t get why someone would block themselves off from a whole universe of music just because it’s not old. There is so much amazing new music being created right now - it’s just that you don’t hear about it, because it’s not on the radio unless you’re listening to a college indie station.
Have you ever heard of Calexico? Broken Social Scene? The Drive By Truckers? Silversun Pickups?
I guarantee you will like at least a few of these bands. All of them probably have songs that you would enjoy.
Music with a good beat, you say? Phoenix. Booka Shade. Squarepusher. Wagon Christ. Amon Tobin. Mr. Scruff.
I could go on and on with this list, but it would take hours and I don’t feel like doing it right now. For starters, you should just check out the bands I’ve mentioned.
WIUX, the IU radio station, has a Winamp stream that you can listen to: WIUX online. All you need to do is click that link and you can listen to the station. You will hear some great music, you will hear some not-so-great music. But all of it is totally unique. From 5 PM until 7 PM is a bullshit sports show, but all the rest of the day is a wide variety of great music.
