And now it doesn’t!
Chrome killed this extension for me today, because I didn’t download it from their store. And it won’t let me re-enable it. It’s the beginning of the end.
Think I’ll go back to Lynx.
That actually started a couple of years ago.
To install any extension that wasn’t purchased at the Google app store you have to drop it onto the Chrome extensions window directly. See this post for more details.
It seems to be working in Icecat ( a form of Firefox 24 ); many avatars are working making the place look normal once again, so thanks.
My own avatar hasn’t come through yet, maybe after a restart; and Crazyhorse’s is there, but whited-out. Probably an Icecat problem since it shows but whites out very large images ( a previous Firefox problem allegedly, but I never saw that behaviour on Firefox ).

Normally it takes up to an hour for a new avatar to get picked up by the system after you enter the URL into your profile. But I actually can’t load the link in your profile manually either, so I think there may be a typo in the URL. (ImageShack - Best place for all of your image hosting and image sharing needs)
Thanks, seems like it. I’ll have to locate the original from a kajillion images here and upload somewhere. Looking on the internet for Riechsflagge churns up depressing nazi crap like nobody’s business…

I noticed recently that several posters whose avatars I’ve come to recognize didn’t have an avatar. In each case they have the image hosted at photobucket.
It seems that starting sometime recently if you direct link to an image on photobucket it gets redirected to an html page that displays that image rather than loading the image directly.
So “photobucket/image.jpg” gets changed to “photobucket/image.jpg.html” when you load it and that will confuse the avatar script.
There should be some option within photobucket to get a direct link to the image and that is what you want to use.
I don’t even see a place in my CP to change my avatar though.
Ah, that needs to be done in your user profile.
Right now you have http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Tinkslinks/unk.gif entered there, but as noted there seems to be something going on with direct links to photobucket recently.
ETA: now that I loaded the image manually and returned to this thread, your avatar shows up. I don’t know if you edited it in the meantime or if it was related to the aforementioned photobucket strangeness.
I was going to use Pinterest, but they wouldn’t let me upload 100x100. That’s the limit, right? Is there another place people recommend, please?
http://postimage.org/ is a good one. It’s free and is dedicated to hosting images for forum and avatar use so hopefully they won’t go changing the links around later like photobucket seems to have done.

Yes there is a delay before the system picks up the change to your profile. It is usually under an hour.
But note that right now the link above isn’t what is in your profile - it shows up to me as just http://s26.postimg.org/wc5m5nan9/ which won’t work. If you enter the complete direct link, as above, then it should work fine after a short time.
Okay, now using http://s26.postimg.org/wc5m5nan9/turqboop100x100.gif- … is there supposed to be a space after the : or not?
After the first : I mean, not the one IN the URL.
Yes that should work exactly like it is.
It takes up to an hour for the script to update with the new link but once it does that one should work.
