Want to see avatars on the SDMB? Here's a script.

Okay, cool. I wasn’t asking about the script so much as “developer mode”. God, Google sucks.

Just that my old laptop was fried from spyware. So I’m probably a wee over-cautious.

The SDMB Avatar script has been updated to fix a broken link in the feature to use the old board smilies.

For Firefox and Greasemonkey, the updated script is available here.

For Chrome users affected by Google’s recent embargo on non App Store scripts, the updated script is available here as an unpacked Chrome extension.

Instructions to install the Chrome version as an unpacked extension:

  1. Download the zip file containing the source files hereand extract it. It will create a single folder named “SDMB Avatars Chrome” wherever you choose to extract it.

  2. Open Chrome, and in the Chrome Extensions window check the box for “Developer Mode” and then click “Load unpacked extension” as shown here.

  3. Choose the folder that you extracted in step 1 and press OK.

The SDMB Avatar script will be installed and enabled.

Unfortunately I stopped using this a while ago. Having to get rid of the warning popup every time I opened Chrome was annoying. It always waits like 15 seconds to pop up, too, so I’ll start typing the url and it’ll appear in the middle of it, interrupting me.

Boo, Chrome, boo!

Thanks for that.

I uninstalled the old before replacing it with the new, but I don’t know if that was important.

Does TamperMonkey no longer work to let Chrome run GreaseMonkey scripts (which aren’t in the App Store)?

Thank you for the update!

Actually I never tried Tampermonkey before, but after a quick installation and test it seems to allow the script to work fine in Chrome.

That is a very good solution for Chrome users who want to use the avatar script without the annoying developer mode popup.

Thanks BigT.

Let’s just hope Google doesn’t get rid of it, due to the same security concerns that led them to limit everything to the Play store.

I still cant see my avatar, but I can see you guys’s avatars

Maybe that’s intentional? I can’t see mine either.

If I recall correctly from when I had this script switched on, it can take a little bit for your avatar to start getting picked up by the script.

I am not very computer savvy. Where do I download the script for IE? I have already added the photo link to my profile.

Note: The original link on Page 1 doesn’t work…I get page cannot be displayed. :frowning:

The URL in your SDMB profile has parenthesis around the avatar URL. Those are preventing the avatar script from finding the image. e.g. “SDMB Avatar: (Imgur: The magic of the Internet)”

If you remove the parenthesis it should work fine, but as noted above it can take up to about an hour for it to start appearing to you and others once the URL is corrected.

I don’t know of a good way to run userscripts in IE - for the moment at least the script is only supported in Firefox using the Greasemonkey add-on, or Chrome using the Tampermonkey add-on.

There may be a third party add-on for IE that will allow userscripts to be run but I’m not aware of any that are directly compatible with Greasemonkey/Chrome style scripts.

For what it’s worth your avatar does show up to other users of the script - example here: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

If you need any help to get it working with Firefox or Chome we can do that (the latest version of the script is now hosted at SDMB Avatars ), and I’ll try to investigate any way of getting scripts to work in IE and let you know.

Thanks. It was late when I added it and I didn’t realize I left those in.

Thank you Crazyhorse.

I am now running Firefox and have downloaded the script. Where do I check to make sure that scripts are enabled? I haven’t used Firefox much in the past.

Wow! I figured it out and it’s working. Thank you so much.

Sorry if I’ve missed it, but is the in-line image script similarly available?
