Want to see avatars on the SDMB? Here's a script.

Well, I’ve never been one of those.

That’s interesting. Does that mean that a guest could put put something in that line and have it show up as an avatar via the script?

There are two different ways that the script gets a picture.

  1. From a URL to a photo sharing site (or really a picture anywhere on the net) that is in your user profile.

  2. From an actual picture that you uploaded to your profile which is a feature only available to paid members.

It sounds like Inner Stickler’s pic is from the second option. It may be a weird unintended consequence of our tiered membership and after market script that you can’t undo that avatar unless you pay again.

Yes.

I don’t have that line. This is what my Additional Information section looks like. No pic links to be seen.

The only way to get to it is: User CP->Edit Your Profile Picture.

Can you see that? I am guessing that that option is only available to paid members even if you just want to delete what is there.

Your best bet, if you want it removed, is to PM an Admin who should be able to edit it out.

I suspected as much, I just wanted to make sure that Fenris and I were on the same page since it appears we should have the same display.
edit: I’m not upset or anything. As far as I’m concerned the picture can stay or go. But, I figure there might be people who are in a similar situation who would appreciate a heads up as well as any members who are thinking of becoming guests who might want to remove their profile pic beforehand.

That’s what mine looks like too, but you can put a pic link under the “Additional Information” line (where you put the line about “Greatness and avoiding pasta”). Clearly you didn’t.

Y’know what would be interesting–see which one the script pulls second: in other words, if you take out the pasta line and put a link to (say) that pic link above, which one would take precedence?

Ok, I swapped it for a link to a pic of me with a beard so if it changes we’ll know which field takes precedence.

Well, it’s been an hour or so-has his avatar changed? Has mine changed?

Yes, his lovely beard is showing and you are currently Blart.

Thank you.

Hmph. :frowning: Oh well.

Ahh, fond memories.

If you right click your displayed avatar and choose “view image” it is in fact coming from the SDMB and stored, somewhere, in your profile

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/image.php?u=53900&dateline=0&type=profile

It looks like if you have been a member at one time and uploaded an avatar, then let your membership lapse, the image remains buried in your profile but the controls to edit it or replace it are taken away. I will have to look into this and make sure I understand what is happening before making any changes to the script but if this is a problem it can be prevented within the script if necessary.

I see the new URL that you put in your bio, but it doesn’t have "SDMB Avatar: " in front of it, so it won’t get picked up by the user script. It normally takes up to 1 hour for any changes to avatars to be picked up.

Czarcasm, I don’t see any avatar for you at all but you are also still a charter member and have full ability to edit your profile avatar so maybe that is why the change worked and Stickler’s didn’t.

Also the link goes to a display page but not the image itself - try

SDMB Avatar: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

I doubt it should be necessary to make changes. This seems a sufficiently rare issue that it is negligible. I can’t imagine the board mods not honoring a poster’s request to delete the image file from their profile because they are no longer a paid member and thus cannot access the tool themselves.

That story being…?

I enabled “show signatures” when I joined the board - the fact as to why I still can’t see mine or anyone else’s I guess shall have to remain a blessed mystery.

Most people don’t show their signatures very often. To display a signature, you have to check the “Show your signature” box when posting. I’ll post mine, can you see it?

Nope.
