Warlords of Draenor: WoW General Discussion thread 10/13/2014

Spent the past week being OCD and trying to level up my pets so I can complete the “Pets vs Pests” quest to unlock the menagerie. Finally do it last night, after a few hours of catching rare / uncommon pets to work my way through all previous expansions’ trainers, because all the advice I’d read on beating the quest involved using a pet that was unlockable after the MoP pet quest chain.

On a lark, I decide to take what I have (still was working on WotLK trainers) to see if I could at least knock one off. To my surprise, I was able to take all three down, and I build my menagerie to Level 2.

I go and check the 6.1 patch notes, and I see that they are going to considerably nerf “Pets vs. Pests.” Dammit. All that time, wasted.

I dunno. They can’t take your bragging rights away.

“I got that achievement when it was HARDCORE! Not a GIMME for you CASUAL LOSERS!”

I wish I were joking about that. You certainly see it a lot. (Not grumbling about you… just ill-mannered people out there.)

Maybe a more benign version would be applicable to you: you put in the effort and got your results. A small thing to be a small degree proud of.

Anyway, regarding the menagerie… unless you’re pretty lucky or have been diligent in keeping your pets blue and 25, you’ll discover that the dailies will also call for some leveling. I’ve had the menagerie in my main’s fort for more than a month, and I’ve only now gotten to the point that I can field a credible team for every one of the daily fights.

It used to go like “Ok, today’s daily is <name of pets>. Research online… Ooh, this composition looks good, but I don’t have a level 25 Sen’jin Fetish, and my best Alpine Foxling is green quality, and I don’t have this Disgusting Oozling at all.” I would repeat this for the other google returns for pet strategies for this fight, then growl in disgust because none of them were feasible. I’d have to drop the quest and take a note to upgrade and improve some pets so I won’t have to give this quest a miss next time.

I hope this isn’t too much of a recurring problem for you.

Honestly, I just wanted the building. I have little, if any, intention of doing pet dailies. Just seeing the “!” and the empty space in my Garrison bothered me. It’s the same reason I’ll probably eventually queue for PvP - to clear out those introductory quests in my quest log.

There is one achievement that I’m extremely proud of - to where my guildmates sent me “real life” gifts when I achieved it. I worked my ass off for the original Loremaster title, before they streamlined it and gave you a breakdown of each zone’s quests. I just knew I had 600-something in the Eastern Kingdoms and 400-something in Kalimdor. (Or some similar number)

It was a bitch to accomplish, and I remember being on Vent, shooting the breeze with guildies for weeks while I tried to find the elusive “!.” I still use “Loremaster” as my primary title, even though it doesn’t seem nearly as impressive now.

And the award for “worst mount grind in the game” goes to…

The crimson waterstrider that I just got. Finally. Fishing up a hundred lunkers, good grief. Worse than Emperor Shaohao rep.

Congrats!

For the same reason, I wish I could just make Khadgar’s Pet go away. I’m not planning to do the legendary quests, and I get annoyed having him wandering all over my digs.

I logged in an played today for the first time in a couple weeks. I’m kind of bored already. My paladin got to level 100, finished all of the zone storylines, and then it was, “Now what?” This is where I get indignant about Blizzard’s constant opposite-extreme responses from one expansion to the next to complaints about the previous expansion. Too many dailies in MoP? Okay, NO dailies in WoD! grumble Wrath was still, IMO, the best-thought-out expansion.

Anyhow, as far as my transmog grinding goes, my paladin is missing only the gloves from the Lightbringer set. So, time to hit up The Battle for Mount Hyjal again. Her first time there, the second boss at the Horde Encampment dropped three glove tokens … all three the same, unusable my my paladin. Today, three more tokens, two the same and one different, but still all unusable. It figures that it would have to be the most tedious, time-consuming raid fight in TBC that won’t drop what I need. Every single other paladin piece from that raid tier dropped for me on the first attempt. But no, the piece that drops from the boss where I have to first get through 16 waves of trash and three other bosses, and run all over creation to clear the trash waves in the Horde camp …

My warrior, needing only the T1 chest and legs, cleared Molten Core again and got the legs; my warlock needs only the T1 chest, but for the third time in a row it has failed to drop.

On another note, was there some sort of garrison-server glitch in the last few days? On my character-selection screen, most of my level 90+ toons were shown to be located in Lunarfall (i.e. in their garrisons), but when I logged them in they were all actually in the locations where their regular hearthstones were set. My paladin was in Nagrand, priest was at Sunsong Ranch, warrior was at the Shrine of Seven Stars, etc.

It’s conceivable, but I never saw it. Maybe specific to your realm or whatever they call the consolidated clump of realms.

As to your earlier post (forgot to multi-quote), the change in day-to-day tempo from MoP is very odd, but I’ve gotten used to it. It turns out that the mini-games (like Garrison follower missions, or garrison building stuff) is a big part of what you do in WoD. Which is completely different from actually playing WoW, IMHO.

Other than that, daily heroic, daily apexis quest, tavern/inn daily if you have one and feel like it (since they become repeats with less interesting rewards after a while)… umm. Actually, that’s really all the “actually playing WoW” dailies I can think of. Which is just weird. I guess the garrison crap is actually most of the day-to-day “routine”, like MoP farm times 1000.

Just nabbed myself the Bloodhoof Bull mount from Nakk the Thunderer after a fairly short camp of maybe an hour and a half. Caught myself 4 lunkers while I waited, so win-win.

Having a good week for mounts, so far. Up to 140 now.

This is all I do. I log in, do follower missions and then logout. I don’t raid or pvp so after getting a couple of peeps to 100 and finishing Nagrand there’s nothing left. So I’m gearing up my guys through the missions waiting for Tanaan Jungle to open up.

I took my paladin into Tempest Keep for the first time yesterday. Kind of a boring raid, at least for the purpose of soloing at +30 levels  But I did get both T5 shoulder and chest pieces. Now to run through Serpentshrine Cavern. I’ve been there once before, but solely for the purpose of fishing up wossname on the way to my Salty title (in fact, I think that was the last thing I needed. I’ve never run the whole thing.

Refresh my memory - is Zul’Aman a 5-man now?

Also, locating Gruul’s Lair - is it up at the top end of that big canyon in Blade’s Edge, the one full of ogres?

ETA: Also, can anybody recommend an up-to-date gear-set manager addon? My paladin has reached the limits of the built-in gear-set manager.

I farm Tempest Keep weekly in hopes of getting the Ashes of Alar mount and the handful of pets that drop in there. Those usually sell well in the Auction House because they are needed for one of the Raiding With Leashes achievements. Serpentshrine has no mount, but does have pets, such as the Tainted Waveling and the Tideskipper, that usually sell for even more than the Tempest Keep pets. Tideskipper might fetch 1-2k gold on my server, so a weekly run through there is usually worth my while. The only boss that requires any effort at all is the last one, Lady Vashj.

I camped the last of the WOD rares this week. Gorok, that drops the Great Goretusk mount was the last one I did. Camped for about 8 hours, one of the longer ones I’ve done.

Now I’m trying to force myself to complete the Love Fool achievements - the stuff I’ve done so far was unspeakably dull, but maybe it gets better.

Yes. Gruul’s Lair is south of Felstorm Point and west of the road that leads to Netherstorm. The cave entrance is marked on the map.

It’ll take you 5 minutes, tops, including the 3 minutes of running around the damn cave looking for things to kill.

Woohoo! Third time’s a charm! Finally got that T5 glove token from Hyjal for my paladin’s Lightbringer transmog!

(What’s up with those boots? They totally don’t match.)

In the middle of everything, while I was in the raid, out of nowhere I got an invite to join a group  I declined, naturally, but then I noticed the name of the person inviting me: “Blizzardgmso” Yeah, reported that one. With a name like that, they weren’t up to no good.

My paladin also has her three pieces of crafted gear from The Forge in her garrison, so she knocked it down and replaced it with a Salvage Yard, and then immediately upgraded it to Level 2. We’ll see what she gets.

My paladin also hit up Serpentshrine Cavern tonight, and picked up her Crystalforge helm and legs, to go with the shoulders and chest she got in Tempest Keep. Didn’t get the glove token, but at least that boss is fairly early in the raid and shouldn’t be the tedious pain in the ass the Lightbringer gloves were. The downside is that the matching boots, belt, and bracers are apparently “zone drops”, meaning the only way to get them is to grind trash in SSC and TK and hope they drop.

Spent some more time with my warlock today. When she hit level 90, I elected to not learn Pandaria Flying, as I had no plans to take her any further through MoP once she got to 90 (which she reached before completing even Jade Forest). But then I did my research and discovered that, if she wants green fire, she needs to unlock the Isle of Thunder to get the drop from rare spawns that starts the process. sigh I also hadn’t planned to bother with the IoT on my warlock, since she hit 90 shortly after they eliminated the Honor/Valor quest rewards. She had no Pandaria flight points aside from Jade Forest, the eastern half of the Valley, and the Shrine, and I wasn’t about to ride horseback all over the continent to collect the FPs, so Eilyssana sent her 2500g from the guild bank and she trained her flying, flew off and collected only the necessary FPs, and hit the IoT. She got one rare kill, but no drop. So I guess she’ll be going back and hunting rares until she gets it.

Thanks

A round of unscheduled server restarts is ongoing at the moment.

Guaranteed method of making some Poundfist campers very unhappy, hehe. Pretty much guarantees no spawns until late Sunday, and the odds of it not spawning at all before the Tuesday restarts are pretty good as well.

/cheer

(Yes, I’ve been annoyed by nonstop Poundfist spam while questing through Gorgrond.)

Yes, it’s a Cataclysm heroic 5. So it doesn’t drop any tier gear. But it does have low-likelihood mount drops from two of the bosses.

I had no idea that was a hard mount to get. While traveling through Gorgrond I happened to spy Poundfist, tagged him, and one other person came along and helped me kill him. I thought Poundfist was just one of the regular rares you see scattered throughout WoD.

A while back, someone in this thread posted a really useful link for mount collecting - do any of you guys remember it? I tried searching for it but didn’t have any luck.

I’d never really been over to Isle of Giants before a few days ago, since Timeless Isle was the default post-90 playground when I started playing again last year. But I’ve been enjoying messing around hunting dinosaurs lately, trying to collect the 10k bones for the mount. And this morning, I got one of the Primal Eggs.

I can’t wait to see what it hatches into!

Is there any point in keeping a Stable after getting all of the trained mounts?
