Was anyone else impressed by McCain tonight?

But still beyond some people.

:shrugs:

It’s hard not to be a sore winner when your political philosophy is based on hate.

He is a decent and honorable man. With some very bad influences.

Me too.

Omigawd! Are you saying that all these weeks of ranting about how dangerous it is to elect this total neophyte with un-American, socialist ideas and terrorist confederates was–insincere?? That McCain is really okay with the idea of President Obama?

Gosh, I’m shocked, shocked to find there’s gambling with American voters.

Terrorist fist bumps all round!

Indeed.

Pseudotriton, I apologize for misreading you statement re McCain and the N-Bomb.
Having said that, yes, I think that’s the kind of statement he would have had to have made to deserve your continuing hatred. I don’t like it, but what was once called vicious campaigning is now “hard hitting”.
It’s over, it didn’t work, maybe they won’t think it’s as useful next time.

The gracious acceptance speech is as much a part of the political culture as the unfounded personal attack. It’s commonplace to take that opportunity to praise all the good qualities of the person who you were calling lower than scum 24-hours before. No serious politician takes that kind of thing personally.

Heck, McCain could have just been taking the advice of Slate on this.

But even though McCain was essentially saying what every politician has to say, he was clearly sincere, honest, and forthright about everything. It was a good speech because it [d]did** stick to the template and tried to put aside the differences in order to unite the country. I give him a lot of credit for it.

Were you specifically addressing a single poster with this or generalizing about the either Obama or the Democrats? Whichever way you meant it, I think you are wrong. Which political philosophy do you see that is based on hate?

GIGObuster, I am amazed you can be this upset over a few short words. She was there and he spoke about her. It was far from the main part of his message. See what he does in 2009. See if he follows through on working with Obama instead of against him. If he does try to work with him, then he is the John McCain I am still defending. If he does not, I will sadly concede I was wrong and you were correct.

I wasn’t particularly impressed with McCain’s concession speech. Every presidential concession speech I can remember has been some variation on “now we have to work together.” And when an audience starts booing the president-elect, saying “please, please” doesn’t cut it.

His praise for Palin was because “that’s how it’s done these days,” just like the rest of his campaign. But the result of the election is a huge signal that we don’t want it done that way anymore.

I **hope **you are correct. I would love to see our campaigns clean up. It has happened before. The Presidential campaigns were usually nastier in the 1800s as an example. Maybe Obama’s incredible victory will change the way campaigns are run.

I’m afraid she will use the Stevens Re-election (If it proves to be correct), and then expulsion too appoint herself to the Senate.

Seconded. She can go bleed to death alone in the snow for everything she’s done to this country.

While withholding judgment on that question itself–I’m getting a lot of interesting feedback and I want to let it sink in–do consider that the concession itself was uncharacteristically quick, as if McCain was all too happy to call it a night and give Barack Obama his time in the limelight. And as if he were relieved to have lost. (I’m glad I’m not the only one who perceived that.)

That’s what I’ve observed in the last two Presidential elections and the Proposition 8 election here in California, yes. That’s what you meant, right?

That actually seems likely. I think I have mentioned that a dozen times in the last week or two. I may even have posted it somewhere here on the dope. I was really disappointed Stevens did not lose.

Yeah it was post on here that gave me my next nightmare.

I’ll bet you a buck she won’t.

Seems a mite harsh. I think Governor Palin’s an annoying, self-important, hypocritical, disingenuous, obsucrantist nitwit, but she hasn’t actually DONE anything meriting that sort of bile. She participated in an entirely dishonorable campaign, but she also lost, and that is itself a punishment.

You’re such an asshole! (Was that misspelled here or there?)

I was looking forward to McCain famous temper being barely held in check, so with those expectations, I was very impressed.

You’re talking about Bush v McCain in South Carolina 2000, right?

McCain’s speech left me a little weepy and very, very proud of our country. I felt he accepted defeat gracefully and I thank him for manning up to do it quickly, not putting the country through any more nervousness than necessary.

I do not know how he managed to say “the failure was mine” with a straight face. I likely would’ve come unhinged and screamed, “THE FAILURE WAS THAT FUCKTART BUSH WHO STOLE MY PRESIDENCY IN 2k THEN RAPED THE OFFICE AND SOILED MY REPUBLICAN BRAND FOR EIGHT LONG YEARS WHILE I SAT IN MY ITCHY, UNCOMFORTABLE SENATE SEAT SECRETLY WISHING HE’D CHOKE ON A PRETZEL!!!”

This is why I’m not running for president, of course.

Palin was unnecessary and I quite hope the GOP turns on her with a quickness.

The boos of the crowd were expected. If it were the other way around, I would likely boo and hiss during our concession speech as well. We’re only human.
