Was George Bush Sr. Deep Throat?

In a tangent to this discussion I wanted to name “Deep Throat” in my death pool picks. I wasn’t sure it would be kosher, but I thought it would be a clever pick.

There was just something on CNN about Deep Throat, but I wasn’t really listening so this may be completely correct. It seems that Deep Throat is ill. And that the only other reporter at the Post who knows the real identity of Deep Throat has already written the obituary for Deep Throat. The information comes from Dean who has his own “Deep Throat” at the Post.

Ben Bradlee, the editor of the Post, is the other person who knows DTs identity. The CNN segment said that DT is near death. Anyone know which of the suspects is ill?

Cute joke, but c’mon! Everybody should know it was Hal Holbrook.

True Blue Jack

Has anybody checked on Al Haig lately?

This whole thread and no shout out for my favorite candidate the FBI’s W. Mark Felt?

SLATE summarizes some of the points … but two me the strongest element is that weakness of any 3 person secret - somebody talked: Bernstein’s son Jason told his camp buddies his Dad told him it was Felt and Bernstein’s ex-Nora Ephron said the same.

Felt was a stroke victim 6 years ago and it is not impossible he is slipping …

Today’s LA Times has this opinion piece written by John Dean. Dean says that he doesn’t knows who DT is, just that he knows he’s ill, and that we’ll probably find out who it is very soon. Most of the article is his musings on reporter’s and confidential informant’s rights.

So we have one person (Dean) saying Deep Throat is currently ill and one person (Havill) saying Deep Throat is GHW Bush.

And yet, as far as I know, the former President is NOT currently ill.

By the way, the fact that Bradlee has already written DT’s obituary doesn’t mean much. News organizations have obituaries on lots of public figures sitting in a filing cabinet, ready to go, and then update them as life events dictate. Probably Bradlee wrote DT’s obituary in 1973, takes it out once in awhile, re-reads it, and then puts it back in the safe.

He looked fine at the Super Bowl.

Sorry, I hit submit too soon. . .

Of course there is one public figure who was in Washington during the Watergate era, and who is known to be currently ill: the Chief Justice of the United States.

He became a Republican Party official and achieved prominence in the Phoenix area as a strong opponent of liberal initiatives such as school integration. Rehnquist campaigned for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater during the 1964 elections. During that time, he befriended Richard Kleindienst, another attorney from Phoenix. When Richard Nixon rose to the presidency a few years later, he appointed Kleindienst deputy attorney general of his administration. Kleindienst sought Rehnquist for the position of deputy attorney general in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel. When Justice John Marshall Harlan retired in 1971, the Nixon administration chose Rehnquist as Harlan’s replacement.

Campaigned for Barry Goldwater, who was one of the early Republicans to voice his disgust about Watergate. A former high ranking official in the Justice Department, who would certainly have many contacts there even after he went to the Supreme Court. Someone whose anonymity would have been, and would still be, precious to him.

Of course, I’m sure there are probably a dozen other possibilities who would have motive, opportunity and means.

Pope John Paul II is Deep Throat. Admit it; you never saw it coming.

If it’s someone who was prominent in the Whitehouse and is currently near death, maybe Gerald Ford?? (my money’s on Haig, though).

I don’t think he’s ill, but I always heard the rumors that DT was Ben Stein. Yes, that Ben Stein. Not sure what he was doing then besides writing speeches and being a Republican lackey. And to think that back in 1972 he was my dorm proctor at UCSC!

The Chief Justice is very ill indeed. No idea how Haig is doing. Go figure.

L. Patrick Gray, in the parking garage, with the ice pick.

Does anybody know if Fielding is ill?

Considering that he recently served on the 9/11 Commission, I can’t imagine that he’s in too bad of a shape. (Unless he declined very recently.) He’s 65 years old.

Ben did at least work in the White House, so he’s a more plausible candidate than some of the people named in this thread. He appears nine times in the index to Woodward and Bernstein’s The Final Days. But he almost certainly wasn’t important enough to know all of the things that DT knew.

Although Ben S being DT would be amusing beyond all comprehension, I am still holding out for L. Patrick Gray.

Oddly I can find nothing on the Web about LPG’s current health.

I caught snippets of the story on CNN. It was all about the Times thing with Dean so if you read that you have all the information. One thing they did mention was that W & B have come out in the past and denied that DT was Haig or Diane Sawyer. I think that would rule Haig out. As far as I know he is in good health.

i’m with little nemo… it is the pope. these rumours didn’t start until he was in hospital.
