For whatever it’s worth, Ben Stein denies that he’s Deep Throat.
Also, he was on Loveline last week. He’s healthy and in his early 60s.
If Stein were Deep Throat, that would explain his money and his incredible smugness. He acts like a man with a huge private secret.
In related news Deep Throat is returning to theaters.

Ford wasn’t in the White House during the critical early period, from late 1972 to mid-1973, when Deep Throat seems to have given most of his information to Woodward. (Going by my recollection of All the President’s Men.) He was busy being minority leader in the House of Representatives. He didn’t get sworn in as Veep until December 6, 1973, according to this bio.
Similarly, Haig wasn’t in the inner political circles at the White House during this period. He was in Kissinger’s office as a national security adviser from 1969-1973, according to this bio.
Me too!
It would be the ultimate insanity from an ultimately insane man.
Actually it was just a bout of indigestion and I’m feeling much better now. Sorry for the false alarm.
I had thought Deep Throat was none other than Nixon himself.
He anonymously narced himself out, purposly sabotaging his own presidency in order to avoid handing over the White House taped recordings which contain his involvement in the Bay of Pigs invasion and subsequent Kennedy Assasination.
My money is on either William Rehnquist or Gerald Ford. They’re the only people I can think of who were in a position to know and who are now gravely ill.
Hmm…hadn’t thought of Rehnquist in a while. I think you may have something there, Sam.
Ford was in the House of Representatives until late in 1973 (sworn in as vice president on December 6, 1973). But I believe Woodward met with Deep Throat in 1972. So I can’t imagine a congressman would know that much about what was going on in the Nixon White House.
On the other hand, Rehnquist joined the Supreme Court on January 7, 1972, although he was an assistant attorney general in 1969-1971. So from 1972 onwards, would he be familiar with the goings on at the White House?
I thought William Safire was high on most peoples’ lists. Strange that I haven’t seem him mentioned here.
I find it odd that Woodward and Bernstein will only reveal Deep Throat’s identity AFTER he’s dead, and can no longer deny being Deep Throat!
Given Woodward’s record of dissembling (anybody REALLY believe he sneaked into William Casey’s hospital room and got a dying confession?), I’m inclined to doubt his word on this.
I don’t believe Deep Throat existed. I think he’s a convenient, composite character.
This just in - W. Mark Felt says in Vanity Fair magazine that he was deep throat.
Has Woodward confirmed?
Deep Throat is a number of persons? Or did you mean to write “his identity”? Woodward has said that Deep Throat is an individual male, not a composite.
Not yet. All 3 of them have declined to comment as of yet.
I think W&B are still saying that they’re not going to comment one way or the other until Deep Throat is dead.
Woodward and Bernstein’s refusal to confirm or deny that W. Mark Felt is Deep Throat makes no sense. If he was Deep Throat, is there any good reason not to confirm this, now that he has revealed himself? If he was not Deep Throat, is there any good reason not to deny his claim?
Their refusal to comment on Felt’s claim only adds to the suspicion that Woodward and Bernstein may eventually give a false answer to who Deep Throat is, with that deceased person unable to defend himself against their claim.
Who is suspicious of this?
Unless Woodward starts denying it soon I think it’s probably safe to read between the lines here. I can’t see why they wouldn’t deny it immediately if it was false.
