Was George on Seinfeld supposed to be gay?

There always seemed to be barriers George built up in his head that prevented him from enjoying himself.

Yes, exactly. Other than the pastrami women, I’m hard pressed to think of a relationship he had that was not fraught with dysfunction. Maybe the woman he met when he was doing the opposite of what he normally did.

Actually, that pretty much describes all the characters. Kramer was the only one who seemed to have normal relationships. I believe this was by design. “No sex without consequences” was one of the rules for the writers.

Just needed to achieve the 1:1 ratio of that joke to posts in this thread. I’ll leave now.

I can’t believe no one’s mentioned the episode of George when he had that male masseuse Raymond. I think that captures his dilemma perfectly.

George is totally straight, but has insecurities that leads him to think he may be subconsciously gay. He’s terrified of those feelings and tries to avoid them, but they keep popping up of their own accord

George: Men have been popping into my sexual fantasies. All of a sudden, I’ll
be in the middle.

Elaine: Of what? Oh.

George: And a guy will appear from out of nowhere. I say “Get out of here!
What do you want? You don’t belong here!”

Elaine: What do they do?

George: They talk back. They go, “Hey George, how’s it going?” I say, “Get
the hell out of here!”

George fits the same paradigm as the guy that Elaine dates in the hope that he’ll “switch teams.” Or when they make fun of George because he made a woman become a lesbian. They’re making fun of the homophobic attitude that you might suddenly be made gay through some unintentional event.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

George’s reaction to female nurse giving female patient a sponge-bath: sexual tension from arousal.

George’s reaction to male nurse giving male patient a sponge-bath: sexual tension from horror.

Or so he claims. :dubious:

Well, he didn’t quote the same part of the episode you did, but…

But you’re right, I forgot about the fact that men were popping into George’s sexual fantasies. Still, I think that was due to the fact that he was so insecure in his sexuality.

My parents bought me a doll house for Christmas.

Yup, gay.
