Was I the ONLY person in Melbourne wearing a dress yesterday?

The pile of dirty clothes was higher than me and the cupboard was bare - except for in the corner under my shoes one lonely, rumpled summer dress.

I had to face reality - for the second time this year I was going to wear a dress and because I was wearing it to work I had to wear stockings (for the first time in two years). I felt extremely self conscious all morning and what was worse I had to sit in for my boss at a meeting in the city that afternoon.

No fear I said to myself, I will catch the tram into the city and on the way I will see lots of people in dresses and then I wont feel so strange (nothing like fitting in with the crowd to boost self-confidence).

Sadly my plan did not work, in the two hours I spent getting to the city and waiting for the meeting I saw four people in dresses:
One had jeans on underneath and thus does not count.
The other three were girls in school uniform and had no choice.

So from this I have come to conclude that it is possible I was the only person in Melbourne who wore a dress by choice yesterday.

Surely not.

Don’t worry leechie, if it gets as hot here today as it did yesterday (43°C), I may be the only Doper posting buck nekkid.

43 degrees!!? Yike! That’s hotter than it’s been here in Toronto since, well, ever! [sub]Okay, it hit 42 during the summer of 2001…[/sub]

Bikini weather…

Stockings? You have to wear stockings to the office?

Yeeesh. Thought that went out with the ark.

I wear skirts and dresses in Brisbane 'cause it’s too hot for jeans. It’s going to be bad here today heatwise. And we’re going Xmas shopping. It was Mr P’s idea so I shouldn’t knock it back but oh god.

Just keep thinking of the air conditioning Prima.

Quite seriously, when we lived on the Far North Coast of NSW, we often used to spend the day at a shopping centre during the wet season solely to escape the hideous weather outside.

Believe me, you don’t ever want to be in a shopping centre in the middle of summer when the air-conditioning breaks down (happened to me last year when I was Christmas shopping).

Whats the big deal about wearing/not wearing dresses when the weather is right? i don’t get it.

Oh yeah for the record I don’t wear dresses at all - but have two good excuses - i am:

a) Male
b) Not Scottish

Growing up on the Gold Coast most of my summer holidays were spent in Australia Fair Shopping Centre where it was nice and cool.

I’m just really surprised that I didn’t see more people in dresses yesterday. I’d say that every fourth woman was wearing a skirt and top combo but the overwhelming majority were in pant suits or jeans.

Dresses tend to be loose. When the temperature gets as high as it does here in summer, you opt for maximum ventilation.

Did you shave the legs or did you go for the mohair look ?

Caught@Work it was semi-mohair but under stockings and the dress was long. I shaved last week and when I got back from Bendigo on Sunday night found that leechboy had used the last of my razors - grrrr.
