There’s no internet evidence of anyone named “Joe Sire Kennedy” anywhere except for sannemoore’s posts on various forums, so I’m guessing that was her grandfather’s name and she thinks the coincidence is meaningful, or she thinks that’s her real grandfather or something. But that’s assuming there’s any explanation the rest of us would understand. sannemoore, your stories sound exactly like the symptoms of schizophrenia. For an annulment to even be an issue, they’d have had to be married in the Church, not just a civil ceremony. No priest would have performed such a marriage without a few prior meetings and possibly some courses / counselling sessions. Possibly the banns would have had to be read publicly also. Much harder to keep all that quiet.
If it were a civil ceremony, then yeah - it could have been annulled and the records destroyed quietly. But Joe would not have had to pay off any priests in Florida or Rome - the Church would simply not have recognized the marriage. To Rome, therefore, It Never Happened.

WAG: combination of the fact that in the US, it’s almost pro forma to be able to get an annulment (well, that’s a bit flip - but I suspect it’s a bit easier than in other countries), and the fact that he was a Kennedy. Arguably, his tomcattery may have helped, in that it would have been an argument for his unreadiness to truly commit to his first marriage. And his family connections got him out of at least one other legal jam that would have meant a long jail sentence for pretty much anyone else.
And lest that get viewed as an un-GQ-like political snark: I liked the man’s politics, but most people wouldn’t argue that his family connections and personal prominence were the reasons he was never charged in the Chappaquiddick incident.
