Was John Guenth a Respected Writer (in the 1950's)?

I remember that uenther wrote a lot of books that were titled “Inside-insert country name here”. He seems t have been quite prolific-was he a trained historian?
I remember reading his strory (about the death of is son from cancer)-Death Be Not Proud"-it was quite good book.
Anyway, is this guy remembered today at all?

Do you mean John Gunther? His “Inside” series were very popular at the time. Other than maybe Death Be Not Proud, he’s pretty well forgotten.

I see the NY Times had a glowing review of Inside USA by Henry Steele Commager, one of America’s top historians. So he probably had the history chops.

I read a couple of the Inside name-of-country (or in some cases, continent) books when I was younger.

They weren’t exactly histories, but they were a lot more than tour guides – sort of like an updated Alexis DeTocqueville tour and impressions of country X.

They were well written, but my memory is that they were a snapshot in time and would be decidedly quaint today.
