It has been 12 years since the fallof the Soviet Union. I am wondering if any info has been madepublic about the actual fate of Colonel Oleg Penkovsky, a Red Army officer executed for spying for the CIA and MI5. Years ago, I read that Col. Penkovsky (out of ideological conviction) had made contact with a British spy (Grenville Wynne), and had agreed to supply Soviet military information the the west. He (Penkovsky) provided his contacts with much high-level information. This went on for several years , until Penkovsky was caught by the KGB…supposedly, he was tried and executed. However, details about him are rather scarce…isit possible that Penkovsky wasin fact a double agent? He may well have been feeding faked information to the west…he may actually have never existed!
Does anybody knowif any more info on the fate of Penkovsky has ever emerged? It would be most embarrassing for the CIA to learn that they (and MI5) had been made fools of!
