Boy, that “musical” guest almost made me miss the rappers!
Looking at the discussion of musical guests on SNL reminds me of perhaps the strangest such guest. In episode 7 of season 4, which was shown on December 2, 1978, Walter Matthau was the guest host. Apparently they either couldn’t afford a musical guest or just didn’t care whether they had one. Matthau said that he’d like to hear Garrett Morris, one of the regular cast that year, sing an aria from an opera. Morris is a singer besides being a comedian. So the only music segment that week was Matthau introducing Morris singing the aria. I remember this still because it was so strange. I can’t find a video of it online.
Was that one of them where they scrolled captions during his performance? The jokes in the captions were kinda meta about how offensive that was to do to a classically trained singer.
I don’t remember.
Schumer’s episode was really solid to me! I liked it all the way through.
The musical guest got a big “MEH” from me tho.
Cecily Strong really laid it out during Weekend Update. I love her so much.
