Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June ...

Since we had a thread the three days ago on a sleepy, dusty, Delta day, should we have a thread about the dark of the moon on the sixth of June?

Mercy sakes, Pig Pen, that’s a big 10-4, for sure. Back them hogs off about another 10 miles, won’cha?

Yep, them bears are getting intense up here…

Not that many ‘novelty’ songs on the airwaves these days…but this one always made me grin.

And it is also “The Longest Day” (D-Day)

Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy!

Pig Pen, this here’s the Rubber Duck. And I’m about to put the hammer down.

It’s been a loooong time but it’s all coming back to me now. I remember being a seven year old, sitting in my dad’s car in the driveway? Why? 'Cause that’s where our only eight-track player was. And I had this tape and wanted to listen to it every waking hour.

And they crashed the gate doin’ 98…

…because no wanted to go back to get a shitload of dimes.

Weird. I just heard this song in a store a couple of days ago and it made me grin.

I didn’t like it when it first came out, and I haven’t heard it in many years, but it was enjoyable to listen to all these years later.

The thing is, truckers really did talk like that on CB radio. My brother had a CB in his car at the time.

Simpsons trucker codes:

Listen, you wanna put that microbus in behind that suicide jockey? Yeah, he’s haulin’ dynamite and he needs all the help he can get.

We got a MIGHTY convoy!

I can still smell those hogs way out here…

They even have a bear in the air…

Ah, how ’bout ya, Big Nasty, c’mon there. Say, listen, Big Nasty, we sure are glad you was along on this here run ta kick ass, dontcha know? Ah, 10-4, I know you can’t say “kick ass” on the CB. Back.

From the version written for the movie.

And eleven long haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse micro bus…

I’ll bet they were fun. And they did help protect that suicide jockey.

Heard about that Message Board in Chi-town?

“New dreams and better scenes, And best of all I don’t pay property tax.”

Wait…that doesn’t seem right.

The '70s CB culture has indirectly survived and proliferated in one specific way: “handles” evolved into “usernames” on internet message boards and beyond.

When I first contracted some internet service company to set up a family website back around 1999, they asked me in an email what I wanted my “handle” to be, and I replied, “Handle? What is this, Smokey and the Bandit?” They thought that was funny.

Goes back a little further than that.

Interesting, thanks! Still, I find the CB and internet message board conceptions of “handle/username” to be more closely related – more than just a nickname, but a way to preserve anonymity when communicating with many people you can’t see, over a distance.

So, the lil ol convoy started out with just “a Kenworth haulin’ logs, a cabover Pete with a reefer on, and a Jimmy haulin’ hogs”. Obviously, the Jimmy is “Pig Pen”, but which is the Duck?

Is he really leading the convoy with a load of unprocessed lumber? What’s he going to do with it in NYC?

The movie gives RD a Mack and a tank trailer. It also gives him a different motivation from the song, so we’ll just ignore that film completely.
