Was this in To Kill a Mockingbird

I know this scene was in the movie. Jem (and maybe Scout) go to the Robinsons’ home with Atticus. Jem stays in the car and Bob Ewell menaces Jem in the car.

I was talking about the book with someone yesterday and he brought up this scene. I say this is not in the book. He says it is in the book. Who is right?

(The closet thing I remember from the book is Dill telling Scout about going to the Robinsons’ home with Jem and Atticus. But there is nothing about Ewell menacing them.)

Don’t remember it off the top of my head. I’m pretty sure it goes down like you described it in the last paragraph.

They may be conflating another scene where Tom’s wife Helen is employed by the judge (?) as a cook and has to walk to work, and gets stalked / harassed by Ewell on the way. The judge ends up picking her up and driving her to work, and then doubling back to the Ewells’ place and [del]kicking ass[/del] putting him in his place.

I just finished reading the book and I can tell you no, that scene is not in there.

And Kythereia, the way I remember it is Mr. Deas, Tom’s employer, was the one who escorted Helen back and forth from his house, once he realized the poor lady was walking a mile out of her way to avoid having to walk past the Ewell’s house.

Aha–that’s it! Many thanks.

There is a scene where Ewell menaces Jem in the film, and that scene is what my acquaintance was remembering.

He also threatened to have Ewell arrested under the “lady’s law” (using foul language in front of a female) if he didn’t stop it.
