Washing fruit

I’m with solkoe up there. I always say I like to let my immune system know who it’s working for, and I get sick less than the more fastidious people I know. If there’s obvious soil on a piece of fruit, I might wash it off, or I might just polish it on my pants. If you’ve never eaten a ripe tomato, fresh from the vine, still warm from the sun, you don’t know what you’re missing.

FWIW I was listening to NPR a week or so ago, and they had a study of the best ways to wash fruits and vegetables. Methods included water, ‘fruit and vegetable wash’ (the kind you can buy at the store), and simply polishing it on one’s shirt. Surprisingly, shirt-wiping did remove a little of the nasties. The most effective method was to mix (IRRC) 1/3 cup white vinegar with a cup of water and use that to wash the fruits/vegetables. Needless to say, it was cheaper than the commercial wash as well.

The ‘commercial wash’ (ie Fit) isn’t approved by our local health department. We are given once choice, Chlorox Bleach. Not even generic bleach, it has to be Chlorox.

No thanks.
