As of yesterday, I am connected to the net at work! Whoo hoo! Actually, I do have a lot of stuff to do and I’m running around a lot, but still…it’s good to know that on those rare days that I’m in the mood to look busy rather than be busy, I have you guys to keep me company through the day.
Only thing is…I know they (supposedly) monitor what we’re doing on the network. Do they only know when I’m online, or would they know specifically where I am? And is there a way for me to tell?
If they have a mind to, they can keep a log of every single URL you access, and the name of every single file you download, from a background image to that tsdbanner.gif up there at the top of the page.
However, that’s a freakin’ huge “if” up there.
Jeannie I’m a sysadmin and at my company, we log users’ web activity. It’s not hard to do, if you are forced to go through a firewall or proxy server to access the net. YMMV but I doubt they’ll care where you go as long as it’s not the porn sites. The actvity logs get big fast (consider we’re monitoring 400+ users) and generally just aren’t worth a close eye but we do a quick check for hits to sex sites and report those serious time wasters to HR. If you’re IT dept is like most, they don’t have time to spy on everything you do and don’t care to either unless your sysadmin is a BOFH (bastard operator from hell). They may also have software than can monitor your non-webbing computer activities like if you’re playing solitare or something but same reasoning applies. Just don’t do anything illegal or really offensive and you’re fine.
