Watch Putricia the corpse lily bloom on live webcam!

They do smell like a dead animal. Explaining what a scent is like to someone who has never smelled it is not something I know how to do, though. Maybe if you’ve ever smelled rotting seaweed on a hot day on the beach, that’s a little towards what it is like?

So kind of like the smell of the water in a vase of dead flowers, maybe?

If you really want to know you could order the main chemicals involved in the smell of death, putrescine and cadaverine.

Or, cheaper and more accurately, buy a bag of these, leave it unrefrigerated for a few days, then open it.

Meanwhile, looks like the live feed is over. Too bad, I wanted to see how detumesced it was now.

Another flower, another live stream

Aaaaand, that one’s done, but here’s another.

In a few days our corpse lily (actually an Amorphophallus konjac) will be blooming in the garden, spreading picturesque stench and attracting admirers and flies.

My konjac blooms (4 this year) have already come and gone. The earliest flowering ever, the first to fully open was on April 5th, the last one to wilt on April 22nd. Now I’m watching daily to see how many leaves come up this year. I moved them to a new location in March and had around 20 fairly large to large corms and around 50 small ones. So far 16 of them have broke the surface.
