They appear to look very similar, and are made by the same owners.
Of course, having multiple brands is certaily a valid marketing scheme.
But (to those of you who own them)-what influenced you to buy one over the other?
Are they pretty much the same?
Nope! Both are made by the same company though. Like a car company making a Caddy and also making a low end city car. Not the same at all. A Rolex has great eye candy value, willl last basicaly forever, should appreciate in value and costs a lot. My GMT Master that I got 27 years ago for $1500 is worth 7 - 9K now. If you want a watch that you will be able to pass down to your kids and If you can afford it a good watch is pretty cool. Men dont get to wear much in the way of bling. IMO never ever get a fake rolex. A nice Tissot or Seiko SKX009x would be much better..
That was informative. All I know about Tudor watches is that they are a Rolex brand, that they cost less than ‘Rolex’ Rolexes, and that there are people who collect Tudors. Post #9 was the most informative one, if maverick knows what he’s talking about.
James Bond. But my first was not a Submariner. My first (which just came out of overhaul) is a GMT Master II that I bought in 2001. I put a Jubilee bracelet on it not long after I bought it. Here is a mock-up I made at the time to help me decide whether to keep the Oysterlock bracelet or to spring for the Jubilee. (I used images from the Rolex site and cut-and-pasted the Jubilee onto the GMT image.) I chose the GMT II over the Sub because I was an active pilot at the time and I liked the 24-hour hand. I originally wanted a Breitling, but I decided it was too flashy. Anyway, there was a GMT Master in Goldfinger.
My first Sub was a vintage one with the ‘pointy’ crown guards. Not quite what James Bond wore (his didn’t have any projections), but I did put the NATO strap on it. My second Sub was made in 1979. I wanted another vintage one because it had the rounded acrylic crystal and I liked the ‘old school’ look. After a couple of years I decided I only needed one Sub and sold the older one half a decade ago. Even made a profit. ![]()
So for me, the reasons I bought Rolexes is that I’m a fan of the James Bond films and I like the chunky, classic (austere) styling.
OK, what’s a NATO strap?
Best wishes,
hh
There were different colour combinations for different branches of service; for example, there’s one that’s burgundy and gold. But I don’t remember what they are. Jame Bond wore an 18mm grey-and-black strap. 20mm fits, and that’s what I had. (Actually, I have a spare strap around, just in case I ever want to put it on my Sub.)
ETA: New style Sub with ‘James Bond’ strap.
