Watching digital download release of Star Wars episodes IV and V sucks

I guess I wasn’t really fully aware of the changes Lucas made to episodes IV A New Hope and V The Empire Strikes Back (best Star Wars film evar!!1!).

Anyway, I know that he added additional “stuff”, like the annoying foreground objects in the Mos Eisley intro, the stupid addition of showing Han and Jabba, the dumb Han shooting second, etc.

But did he also do something with the soundtrack? It seems a bit heavy handed now as I watch. It also seems just a tad bit off, something I can’t quite put my finger on.

I had the VHS versions of the original trilogy back in the early 1990’s (where you could see the mat “frame” around the various ships in space), and absolutely loved them.

I’m now sitting here with episodes IV and V on my 46" flatscreen and Apple TV and can’t seem to get through either.

I’m finding Luca’s additional animations to be annoying, sure, but there’s also a strange sense I’m getting like something just is not right. The best I can say is the soundtrack is off, but also the visuals just seem off. Again, I can’t put my finger on what it all is, except that the result is that I’m not at all enjoying the experience of watching.

[Note: I’ve had this tv/apple/sound setup for about 5 years now, this is my first experience where the viewing was just off.]
