Watching the Alfred E Smith Dinner

What’s wrong with Giuliani’s left eye? Did he have a stroke?

I think he’s just shifty.

Born with "Future Jesuit’ stamped on my forehead. Wanna make something of it?

Oh, dear God, Italian girls are why I didn’t make it as a Jesuit,

Some quotes from The Guardian

Trump on Clinton: “Here she is tonight, in public, pretending not to hate Catholics.” (While Clinton is seated next to a Cardinal):smack:

Clinton: “We’ll either have the first woman president, or the first president who’s started a Twitter war with Cher.”

“There is nothing like sharing a stage with Donald Trump. Donald wanted me drug-tested before last night’s debate - and look, I gotta tell you that Donald thought I used some sort of performance-enhancer. Now, actually, I did - it’s called preparation.”

Anyone want to bet that everything up to the Melania Trump joke (maybe the confession one as well) was written for him then after that he went off script and ranted his usually bile. It was such a stark contrast, jumping straight from a surprisingly self aware joke at his wife’s expense then straight into calling Clinton corrupt.

Keep at it Donald, you’re only digging your own hole deeper and deeper! Nice work!

Really, he tried that crap?

This is an event that is all about being civil while getting some appropriate-for-mixed-company zingers in. Meanness is not rewarded.

“Going to?”

I don’t think I got it quite right, but that was the gist. It was just grade-A asshole material.

He was bad, but not as bad as the coverage has made it sound. He went a little over the line, but not that much. And frankly, so did she.

Go back and watch the 2008 and 2012 dinners. Both sides were infinitely more civil and self-deprecating than Clinton’s set.

Ugh. 19 more days.

Where could I see this?

Post #3 has a link to the full thing on youtube.

Wow. I’m watching the replay. Trump crossed the line. I’ve always enjoyed these dinner speeches, but this was absurd.

Trump, unwisely, turned this into a “fourth debate.”

Hillary then managed to trounce him even worse than in the first three!

Well, damn. Hillary went into the gutter as well. What a brutal election that I hope is not repeated in the future.

Anybody? Tell me what Hillary said that compares equally with “pretending not to hate Catholics.” Sure, both sides do it, but acne is not smallpox.

Trump gave everybody exactly what they wanted. Most importantly he gave his people what they wanted. He went up a notch in my book. He now has one notch.

here

I think it was lucky that Trump went first.

I saw the two speeches out of order; hers live, then later Trump on replay. Her speech horrified me with its digs and nastiness, since I hadn’t seen Trump yet. If the entire audience, and the world, had seen her first, I think some of that impression would have stuck. Then Trump’s nastiness would have looked bad, but at least in part like a response she deserved.

However, by going first Trump was the one to take the heat/come across as most negative. Having his words to compare to hers as she spoke made her look a little less nasty. Also, his wrap-up wasn’t very nice; hers was objectively pretty good, but seen as a contrast to his it was brilliant.

Best lines from Clinton:
“There is nothing like sharing a stage with Donald Trump. Donald wanted me drug tested before last night’s debate. And look, I am so flattered that Donald thought I used some sort of performance enhancer. Now, actually I did. It’s called preparation.”

“People look at the Statue of Liberty and they see a proud symbol of our history as a nation of immigrants. A beacon of hope for people around the world. Donald sees the Statue of Liberty and sees a 4. Maybe a 5 if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair.”

“And Donald, after listening to your speech, I will also enjoy listening to Mike Pence deny that you ever gave it.”

Savage

I disagree that Clinton went into the gutter here, all of Clinton’s digs are based clearly on things that Trump has actually done, or that his surrogates have. They’re on tape, undeniable. Trump’s nastiness about hating catholics, or the media bias or the wikileaks stuff, is just either entirely made up, or blowing stuff way out of proportion. He’s a nasty ugly brute and he came across that way. Clinton was objectively much better, warmer and more playful in her delivery, not attacking with vitriol like he was.

They both told the same exact joke, which I’m not so sure was a coincidence. Hillary got in front of the obvious “speaking in front of a lot of rich people and not getting paid” joke by doing it herself before Trump got a chance to.

ETA: Oh wait, I watched it out of order, didn’t I? Whatever, they did the same joke, though.
