Water and "Outside" are LSD to inside cats!

I recently got a kitten for my sons as they wanted a pet and since I am at work a lot and being divorced they aren’t always here with me, so a cat was the only logical choice as we don’t have the time to devote properly to a dog. Cats being quasi self sufficient and all that.

I’ve owned a couple cats in the past, and it’s been awhile since then, but this kitten (now in his terroristic juvenile kitten stage, about 7-8 months old) is hilarious and annoying in equal parts.

First off…an open window to a view outside the house is LSD to an inside cat. The other day I walked up behind him while he was on his perch on the windowsill in my master bathroom and he was startled by me walking up behind him…but he looked over his shoulder at me and his facial expression, with his big eyes and concentration level seemed to say “hey: I like you and all, but I have to keep my vigil here…there’s stuff moving out there and stuff, yo!” (Reminded me of the old Adam Sandler “Canteen Boy” skit…“I’ve got a bit of a situation over here!”)

Secondly, his water bowl. When he was a teeny tiny kitten several months ago I bought one of those combo water/food bowls where you are supposed to screw a 2 liter bottle into the water side to gravity feed water. Well, that didn’t work so well so the 2 liter had to go, but the combo dish remains. Now he is obsessed with moving his bowls around. I think he is doing it to agitate the water, which of course makes it interesting! This morning before my son’s basketball game we were literally cracking up while eating breakfast while we listened to the scraping sounds of him moving his dish around on the tiled floor (especially because I kept admonishing the cat and moving the dish back up against the wall in the utility room off the kitchen and he kept moving it away from the wall) to make the water move. Sometimes he sticks a paw in there to agitate the surface of the water before he drinks. Is this normal?

Finally: the way cats don’t seem to correlate the relationship between their actions and inanimate objects continuing to move. His favorite target is the Nerf darts from my children’s Nerf guns. He starts batting one around with his paws as if to say “Hey! This thing just keeps moving, so I have to respond!” And he gets his little kitty tail all a’twitch, arches his back, ruffles his fur and everything while doing so.

Conclusion: cats are on a permanent LSD high. There’s really no other explanation!

Never ask whether the thing your cat is doing is normal. Ask if it’s normal for a cat. The answer is generally yes, because that range is incredibly broad.

Get your cat a drinking fountain. It encourages them to drinking, and neutered male cats are prone to urinary tract issues.

I’ve heard a laser pointer is a good thing, too.

Where’s the picture?

Or your cats are keeping you on a permanent LSD high! The Master speaks.

The kitty litter tray is where they keep all the shit that’s illegally high. Just watch that. Your son is at an impressionable age. He needs to know what to look for.

Wow. I knew about the “cat poop toxic to pregnant women” angle, but not the whole “produces LSD” thing. That’s really interesting!

Ah, the teenage stage. Funny and annoying, but mostly funny! Does he jet around the hose after he poos, as if he is suddenly lighter and must go, go, go?!?!?!

Cute and grumpy!

Agreed. This is one of the best things you can do for your cat. They love running water, and they need a lot to stay healthy.
