So I need a water softner. What I see is that most require salt of all things. Salt? I dont understand. I would think that would make the water harder. Can somebody explain to me how this works?

Probably what the situation is is that one of the ingredients required in the softener formula is salt, to get the product to a certain chemical arrangement and balance (through reactions and combinations with the other ingredients) which couldn’t be otherwise attained. The salt isn’t there in the product when you pour it into your washer, but it was put in…! It’s like the ingredient “pig lips” or “chicken eyes” in everyday sandwich meat products. The actual eyes and lips aren’t really there but those parts were used in hot dogs or slices of bologna because of the particular qualities and proteins in those parts.
