-EVERYONE carries a weapon
-military budget is huge! And so is the military
Appeal to liberals:
-forget ONE WORLD government, we’re talking multiple solar systems government here!
-extreme diversity-skin color and race is so not an issue when you have giant lizards as president

-All your cronies are dressed in white. White white white. Bright shiny perfectly crisp and clean WHITE. White like Jesus. White. No matter how impractical it is, WHITE!
-Really BIG vehicles, that probably get shitty gas mileage and kill the environment. Jawa sandcrawler? Just a big SUV.
-Blow up trees and wildlife without regard for the stability of the environment!
-The Empire only allows human males (with some exceptions) into its ranks.
Appeal to Liberals:
-Takes lots of tax money to build a Death Star.
-No Christianity in sight. A whole bunch of other funky religions, but NO CHRISTIANITY!
-Repulsorlift vehicles: Ecologically friendly, and don’t leave unsightful tire tracks all over the place.
-Anyone can be in your army, even three-foot-tall hairy midgets!
Appeal to conservatives:
The Empire is composed of boring over-the-hill white men in ill-fitting military uniforms marching around what is essentially a giant gun attempting to restore order. The Dark Side of the force is a religion all about power and fear. Emperor Palpatine started his political career by being a page for Strom Thurmond.
Appeal to liberals:
The Rebellion is a group of wacko shady characters with questionable pasts. Their poster boy is a whiner. Their members all have a vague love of liberty, but a lot of them only commit to the effort when it suits them or if they’re peer-pressured into it. The Good Side of the Force involves all living things being spiritually connected by a mystical nature force. In other words, “they’re spiritual but not religious”.
Plus the Rebel Alliance is multicultural to the extreme: The leader of Cloud City? A smooth-talkin’ brother! Mon Mothma? Big time lesbian! The Admiral of the Rebel Fleet is a damn squid, fer chrissakes.
Conservatives
The Empire is like a cross between the Third Reich and the Brittish Empire. What could be more conservative than stuffy fascists with Brittish accents?
Fine military accadamies steeped in Imperial tradition
Lots of Laize Faire capitalism and gunboat diplomacy.

The Rebel Alliance is like the rainbow coalition in space.

Not sure where this fits in, but one thing that makes Star Wars appeal to me is that Obi Wan was (supposedly) based on a Catholic saint… 
This conservative likes the fact that the enemy looked a lot like Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Nothing more important to us conservatives than a really bad enemy.
This conservative also likes Natalie Portman, though I’m aware that this can cross ideological lines.
I think Conservatives also like the fact that the heroes are fighting to bring the galaxy to the Way Things Were, back in the Good Old Days.
Remember, the Rebellion is a reactionary movement.
This liberal likes the fact that the enemy looks a lot like most Conservative parties.
