Ways to Help Earthquake/ Tsunami Victims in Addition to Donations

I have appreciated the threads about how to donate to various aid organizations and definitely will give what I can to help.

I’d like to hear from Dopers who have ideas of things that can be done to help in addition to monetary donations. Realistically, I will not be going on a Doctors without Borders or Red Cross disaster workteam. I don’t want to do something wasteful or pointless that could be done much more efficiently by an established organization.

I’d welcome ideas of things that could be done by an “average” person. One example I thought of is donating house/petsitting services to someone who was going on a disaster workteam. Any other ideas?

The only thought I’ve had - besides ones about how to help people in a future such tsunami situation - is - what if I could adopt an orphan? I can’t imagine how to make it work, but those nations are going to be staggered under the weight of reconstruction. What will happen to all those children left without families?

The ideas I had about the future might be - make each household own some variety of lifejacket for every member of the family, or inflatable rafts, or…I don’t know…houses on stilts, warning sirens…?
