Those “Obamaphones” should really be called “Reaganphones”, because the Lifeline program was created in 1984, to provide low-cost or free landlines, with the emphasis being on senior citizens and the rural poor.

How can one get a job and get off food stamps without a phone?

I was on the EBT program, and without it I would have starved. I had two comments from other people in line:

1. You should be drinking plain water, when I was buying some iced tea mix, from a woman who was buying several bottles of soda.
2. I wish I could be using food stamps and buying junk food, when I was buying a half-priced caked for my birthday! I explained this to the person and added what I’ll tell the OP:

Change the name, and the tale is told about you. In other words, anything can happen to anybody, and someday you could be using food stamps.

I was also on line in the grocery the day the whole EBT system crashed. When my card wouldn’t go through, the cashier said in a very nasty voice “Don’t you have another way to pay?” No, you idiot, if I did wouldn’t be using EBT. The manager was standing out front, no doubt being called because the EBT payments weren’t going though. I complained to him, that the cashier herself could be using EBT someday.

Over the years, I worked with several pharmacists who treated Medicaid patients poorly, no matter why they were on it. :mad: I did not allow that behavior (making them wait extra time after the prescription was filled, partially filling it so they would have to make another trip back even though we had enough to send them on their way with a completed prescription, etc.) when I was there, and I also told them, “How do you know you’ll never need it?”

The first time I encountered this, he admitted that he didn’t have health insurance even though it cost $10 a week for a single person (ETA in the mid 1990s). :eek: He said, “I’m healthy. I don’t need it.” Yeah, healthy people get hit by cars, get cancer, etc., you doofus.

There’s other businesses in the area that no longer accept cash - like insurance offices, to name one – and it’s for much the same reasons, theft.

My rental office does not take cash for rent, although they do for laundry chip cards, for this exact reason.

As has been pointed out before, if you pay for goods and services at the time you receive them, it’s not a debt.

If I learned that a citation I found to be reliable had happened to have been used by FOX News, that knowledge would not make me mistrust the citation.

The likelihood that my first encounter with the citation would be through FOX News is nil, of course.
