I mean if we’re going to steelman it then presumably some fraction of the people that find the tacticool aesthetic appealing aren’t alt-right degenerates. Just like not everyone who wears a “wife-beater” shirt is guilty of domestic violence.
It’s just that this fraction probably has zero overlap with recent ICE hires…
The mere fact that there is an open call to look as much like them as possible to confuse the issue could be enough to set him off. Before Trump, there would be court cases where it might or might not be found that the attempt didn’t approach actual impersonation…but I am afraid that, for the most, those days are gone.
Again: He is not looking for actual laws being broken. He is looking for excuses to do what he already wants to do.
I believe the intention is similar to the scene in The Walking Dead when survivors smear themselves in disgusting, rotten zombie guts in order to pass safely and unnoticed through the mindless herd.
The stench of this administation cannot be covered simply with blood and guts.

Actually just spreading the rumor that people are infiltrating will force them to waste time and energy insuring their own bona fides. Might be worth it on that basis alone.
Exactly. These are not an elite fighting force, not highly trained nor highly intelligent.
To my thinking, after I saw that ICE was going to wear masks that prevent identification, this opens up the possibility that anyone could put on ICE gear and start committing crimes under color of ICE authority. This was a concern expressed by many. There have been reports of this, though not nearly as many as I expected.
If enough people did this, then it would restore the proper association between banditry and face covering. I wouldn’t advocate for actually committing crimes, but for muddying the waters by making the authority unclear. We all know ICE are lawless, but currently we know they’re acting under federal authority, so we have to consider this in resisting them. A bandit might rob and beat you, whereas ICE might disappear you entirely with no recourse. ICE is scarier, but a bandit is someone you might resist with deadly force.
If everyone was dressed as an ICE agent, it would be unclear who actually acts with federal authority. It would be a lot harder for ICE to gain compliance if people had a real suspicion that the person might be an imposter who’s really a bank robber or rapist or any random criminal.
That’s a real dangerous position that will get people killed. Look at Breonna Taylor; guy was sleeping with his girlfriend knowing they were law-abiding citizens. In the middle of the night, the door gets kicked in & people are shouting, “Police!” I can’t blame him for thinking it was a ruse & that he needed to defend himself.
I am lucky enough to have both the right skin color & sex organs that ICE probably isn’t going to look my way; I am also a born-here citizen. However, I don’t always have the paperwork in my pocket to prove that & have heard of citizens being taken away & detained by ICE in a guilty-until-proven-innocent mentality.
So not much change from the status quo.
The one-Third Reich leader of ICE (now demoted), Greg Bovino, has been mocked for wearing a long generalissimo coat during photo ops, amid speculation that he bought it as used SS gear. He claims he’s had it for 25 years and that it was an official ICE garment.
Maybe Trump could balance his out-of-control budget and eliminate federal income tax, through sales of wildly popular ICE gear to cosplaying patriots?

Though to be clear, I wouldn’t recommend or advocate for this. I thought it would be convenient if Bad People actually did this, and expected (still expect) to see it at some point, but so far it seems like they must already be with ICE.
Whatever you think about whether ICE is acting lawfully, there’s really no doubt that they’re ICE and are working for the Trump administration. We’ve absolutely not crossed a line where a citizen is going to see someone in ICE gear and question if they’re actually ICE.
