There’s so much wrong in that bigot’s comment in that article. But there is humor to be found in this:
So, as I’ve mentioned on the SDMB before, the jackasses supposedly basing their stances on the Bible don’t have a clue as to what actually is in said tome.
Oh, and the religious freedom law doesn’t seem to protect the woman’s original stance because the legislature seems to have forgotten to include discriminating against swarthier people in that law. I hope they get sued into oblivion.
What the fuck is the “Christian race”? I often talk about the time when only the straight, white, Christian rich man had any power, but isn’t Christianity a religion?
Whatever this “Tires for Tots” is, they should’ve put more thought into that logo. Put some wrinkles in that and it’s really easy to misread as something breast-related.
For extra bonus points, realize that they’re the same kind of people who get all huffy about how Islam isn’t a race so their utter screeching hatred of anything Islamic can’t possibly be racist so there!
There is a religion for these people, though: Positive Christianity, the official faith of Nazi Germany.
I call those people pastor christians. Typically the type who attend church regularly, and many take notes but don’t read the Bible, they consider that since the pastor is reading it that would be basically the same. I usually find they have no clue as to what the bible says and don’t know how to use the bible to help stand against the devil’s schemes and fall to them thinking that they have it right. very sad.
Hey guys, lay off. The Bible is really big, even bigger than People Magazine and doesn’t even have pictures or perfume samples in it. How was she supposed to know?!
As I recall from when I was a kid in a Baptist church, the belief against interracial marriage came from the Tower of Babel story. All the people got together to build a tower to heaven. God didn’t like it so he then mixes up everyone’s speech into different languages. Some fundamentalists believe that interracial marriage will eventually end up in humans all becoming one race again.
So it’s not completely accurate to say it’s not in the Bible; it’s a stupid interpretation of a stupid Bible story.
Many years ago, in a conversation with an American fundamentalist preacher (a missionary type who was a pastor of a Church of the Brethren church in Seoul), the old fart told me that he would not conduct inter-racial marriages because the Bible forbids it. I was too stunned to ask where in the Bible that was. So, it’s not just the bigoted fool in this OP who adheres to such nonsense. What gets me is that there are still people today who think that way.
Oh, and when I’ve heard the Tower of Babel story used to justify it, I pointed out how God miraculously had the speech of the Apostles (you know, actual Christian messengers) translated so that all who heard them could understand in their own language. That should tell the bigots something, but of course it flies over their feeble minds.
Generally, it’s another part of the Bible they use, though. I can’t remember which part right now.
My understanding of the Tower of Babel story is this…
Following the Flood, humanity was concentrated into one group of people descended from those on the Ark. They were united in purpose and decided that they were going to build a tower tall enough to reach Heaven, and by implication were equating themselves with God.
God didn’t care for this situation and to humble them he splintered them into smaller groups of people by preventing them from all speaking the same language. Without being able to communicate they couldn’t continue their project or act as one united group any more, so they abandoned their efforts, went separate ways, and no longer felt they could equal God in their ability to build great works.
The story has two goals. One is to explain why different languages exist in the world. If God wants everyone to be united in religion and morality, why wouldn’t he let them talk to each other? The other is to serve as a parable about arrogance and believing too strongly in the power of humanity over God.
I assume that an interpretation of this story as meaning that people who are different shouldn’t commingle is simply trying to find Biblical justification for racism or any other kind of bigotry. You might as well declare that multilingualism is unholy. And forget about missionaries!
