I arrived in the office this morning to discover that we had a visit from burglars last night. It’s always a rather unpleasant feeling. Lots of laptops are missing but not much else. Thankfully I don’t appear to have lost anything.
I’ve had that feeling. Twice, when I was working at a community centre. Sorry to hear it’s happened to you, Cunctator.
Please tell me they didn’t get the Glengarry leads. 'Ol Gil needs this one.
The police have arrived but they don’t seem to be doing anything very much. It looks like a lot of “going through the motions” to me.

Combined with a running Simpson’s gag, of course.
I hope you had the serial numbers written down to those laptops. If someone tried to pawn them, or sell them on eBay, then you can catch them, since you can check the serial number against your records (though I have no idea how easy or hard it would be to fake a serial number for eBay.)
The total damage seems to have been 10 laptops and a carton of cigarettes.
I hope you had the serial numbers written down to those laptops.
Yes, they were all recorded. I’m not sure how helpful that will be though.
Company I was on contract to once got broken into. Someone had left the building’s side door open, and thieves took the huge cement ashtray (!) into the hall and bashed the lower half of the office proper’s back door in. They took a interesting selection of objects:
A set of multimedia speakers. They ignored the dual 1gig Xeon box these were connected to.
A broken external PARALLEL Zip drive (fer crying out loud!).
A 25-disk spindle of CDRs, ignoring the recorder they were sitting on.
Other odds and ends went missing too, like boxes of pens and such… Most of these were always next to more nifty gadgetry. We never did really understand the motivation here.
:wally
Aw, man, sorry about that. We had a robbery at our office a few years back. Since then we are routinely audited to make sure that all laptops are secured to our desks with security cables. If anyone has a laptop at home or at work, I’d highly recommend paying the twenty bucks.
