We Have Pigeon Eggs

Forgot to add: Sophie turned two months old on Thanksgiving Day and still sleeps here at night. Brother Kevin has been gone a long time now. Good luck, Kevin, wherever you are!

I’m always amazed at how quickly the young ones develop. From hatchling to adult in a month.

I wish I could go to the beach! I’m in Kansas, not many beaches around here.

Well, maybe a teenager in a month. I don’t think they’re sexually developed until about six months. But they do like like fully fledged pigeons at a month. Still small next to their parents though, and their nostrils haven’t gone fully into their final position yet.

Beaches are nice, I’ll clue ya.

Wednesday morning and we expect new hatchings at any time. Matthew, 29 days old and a real cutie, has finally started leaving the tree pot on his own. He hopped out Sunday at age 26 days, but I’m not sure that counts since he was fleeing my while I was out there cleaning. I even had to put him back in the nest myself. Otherwise he kept staying perched on the edge, looking down at the floor but not acting on any impulse. Then yesterday, at age 28 days, a full four weeks, he finally did hop down and joined Dad in the flower box. Got back into the tree pot on his own steam. This should have happened days ago and would have if he’d had a sibling crowding him. But the tree pot is quite roomy for him, and he clearly likes it there. I cleaned out the nest for him Sunday, so it’s extra comfy now. Matthew still shows no signs of virus and seems perfectly healthy. I’m also thinking he’s looking a little feminine. Maybe this one should have been Mochi.

This couple as well as Henry always produce good-looking offspring. Looking around at other pigeons in the city, we see some really ratty ones out there. Must be the stress of big-city life.

Or it could be lack of humans feeding them and giving them medicine!

I noticed cracks in one egg shortly after making my last post yesterday. Thursday morning now but I don’t think we have a squab yet. Mama still covering but no sign of any eggshells yet. Should be sometime today.

The crack turned into a hole by this morning, and I could see movement inside. Then little Marcus finally popped out this evening (Thursday evening). Or so the wife tells me, as Mama won’t move and let me see him.

Hopefully Mochi is coming next.

And I’m pleased to announce we have Mochi too. Hatched this morning (Friday morning). Mother is doing well. The old girl managed two viable eggs this time. Marcus and Mochi are super wiggly. I’ve seen them both.

31-day-old Matthew is doing well, but we’re watching him closely, as Herman suddenly died at age 37 days I think it was.

Oh boy, Christmas babies!

How cool does it ever get in Bangkok?

It gets to where you don’t quite sweat like a pig.

For a few days in early January or so, it may even give some semblance of cool, but only at night. But anytime the temperature drops below 75 degrees, the locals will bundle up like they’re at the North Pole, while I’m still sweating!

I have a friend from high school who lived in Fairbanks Alaska for almost four years. Her husband was in the Air Force, and his next posting was San Antonio Texas. She said if it got down to 32 degress Farhenheit, people in Texas thought it was terrible, but she said it would be a heat wave in Fairbanks.

That’s South Texas. Where I was in West Texas, we got those Blue Northers sweeping down the Plains. Brrr. Zero degrees Fahrenheit not uncommon.

32-day-old Matthew has gone missing. :frowning: He started flying yesterday (Friday) and slept on the rails for the first time last night. Then went off exploring today and did not come home tonight. Usually when that happens, they do return a day or two later looking exhausted. But not always.

Sophie, meanwhile, 10 weeks old today, still comes back.

Marcus and Mochi, two days and one day, respectively, are doing well. I took a close look at them, and they’re little eyes were open just the teensiest, tiniest bit. They usually don’t open for real until three days. They weren’t able to keep them open though.

Monday night and we thought we’d seen the last of Matthew. He disappeared Saturday, just one day after he started flying. Gone the past two nights, then suddenly reappeared today. Didn’t seem any the worse for wear. Staying here tonight, along with Sophie (who attacked him and had to be squirted with water to get her to stop. Bad Sophie!). Funny thing is he’s eating birdseed now but still squeals for a feeding from Dad. Wonder where he was. Or she, as he’s looking feminine. A real cutie.

Marcus and Mochi are four and three days old. Eyes open now.

Sunday morning. Marcus and Mochi are 10 and nine days old, respectively, and healthy. I was playing with them yesterday. They seem to be shocked that this big monster picks them up, but then it looks like they feel the petting and tickling aren’t too bad after all. Right on schedule, they’re starting to produce the beginnings of feather shafts. May be too early to tell for sure but it looks like Marcus will be another whitey, while Mochi may be going to resemble Sophie, with an intricate grayish pattern and some white.

Matthew is 40 days old today, a beautiful white with a little black trim. He’s never shown any signs of virus. And he’s passed Herman, who despite also never showing signs of virus died suddenly at age 37 days. So we hope Marcus and Mochi will be similarly unaffected. Matthew’s still here every night since those two away. We reckon he got lost and is sticking close to home after finding his way back. He’s here a lot in the daytime too. Looks rather feminine, but “he’s” stuck with the name.

Ladyboy and The Bully are starting to get a little frisky again. The Bully is hanging out more in the tree pot too, and the last time I looked a single twig had appeared there. As per Baker’s suggestion, the next batch will be named Rudolph and Clarice.

You know, when that batch comes along I may not be able to resist the temptation to say “well, hello Clarice!”

The Bully has started flying back and forth across the balcony, from rail to rail, if he’s hungry in the daytime and wants to catch our attention. Sometimes just jumping up in the window is not enough, I guess. He’ll fly back and forth while looking right in. Once he even bounced off the glass, whether on purpose or by mistake thinking there was no glass, we’re not sure. Ladyboy has done this a time or two herself.

I’m pleased to announce Ladyboy laid an egg today (Saturday). We thought it was coming soon. She’s sort of been hanging out in the tree pot in that way since yesterday. So Rudolph is out there incubating. The next egg, containing Clarice, will come Monday. They’re doing up the nest nicely this time too.

Matthew is gone tonight, but Sophie’s here as usual. She’ll be three months old the day after Christmas. Marcus and Mochi are 16 and 15 days old and should be hopping out of the flower box by next weekend.

And we have the second egg, laid yesterday evening (Monday evening), as expected. Rudolph and Clarice are out there incubating as I type. Hatchings should start about January 5 or 6. Hope they both make it!

Matthew turns seven weeks today and has been back at night after missing the one. Sophie turns three months on Saturday, Boxing Day. Those are the only kids left out there, besides Marcus and Mochi of course, 19 and 18 days old, respectively.

Oh wonderful! They will hatch right around Twelfth Night! I’ll keep a special eye out for these two!
