I cannot believe how quickly they change. You can see a difference in the same day.
[Sniff] They grow up so fast. [/Sniff]
Not sure what that is. Some sort of yellow baby fuzz. It gradually disappears. Looks rather punkish when a few strands on the head are all that’s eventually left before even that disappears once the feathers come out.
Yes, you really can, especially once their feathers start coming in.
I would like to see an egg actually hatch, but the parents keep them pretty well covered.
Sunday afternoon and Marty and Katie are 12 and 13 days old. We cleaned the balcony today. A lot of shit from the parents on both sides of the flower box and over where the parents sleep at night, but at least it’s localized. A couple more weeks and the squabs will be running all over the place.
Yesterday, Big and Little Pidgee were having sex on our balcony, the little devils. I don’t think we’ve seen that this soon after egg hatching before. It’s less than two weeks since the latest ones hatched. It’s late afternoon now, and they’re outside over on the window frames. Will come back here soon, before dark. It would be great if I could get a shot of them at the moment of climax, when he’s mounted her and is flapping his wings…
I did it! I just took the picture! Two of them, in fact. They were just out there screwing. I tried using a fast speed. Will see if they come out. Post them in the next couple of days.
My wife is fascinated about where is the penis. It’s all over so fast, and no penis to be seen at all. (This is the pigeons I’m talking about here.) After Big Pidgee has had his way with Little Pidgee, he flies off, leaving her behind to stare out from the balcony. He’ll be back before dark, though.
Woo hoo! Pigeon porn!
You are one sick pigeon watcher!!!
When do you say we get to see the pictures?
Pigeon porn! Due to popular demand, I’ve rushed the two pidgee-sex photos. They did not come out too badly, but they’re not as good as I had hoped. Still, considering I was trying not to disturb them, they’re not too bad.
Here we see Big Pidgee firmly mounted on Little Pidgee. Alas! You cannot see Little Pidgee very well, but she’s being a good, submissive little wife.
And here is the “money shot.” At the moment of climax, Big Pidgee flaps his wings frantically. Then he jumps down and flies away, leaving Little Pidgee to stare wistfully after him. (Actually, I see now from the photo that he’s already leaping off of his woman, but when I pressed the button, he had just started flapping; it’s all over so quickly.)
It was funny, but the happy couple had started their deep kissing and mating dance, but then suddenly Little Pidgee broke off to go check on the kids. She gave them a feeding while Big Pidgee waited paitently over on the other side of the balcony. Then she returned, and they picked up where they left off.
I suppose it’s some sort of sad commentary on me that I’m trying to photograph pigeons fucking.
Will post more of the squabs soon.
You are SO funny!!
Siam Sam, you are the Jane Goodall of the pigeon world!
I can’t believe you haven’t read about it by now, but there’s no penis. They bump pussies. Okay, that’s crude and simplistic; they bump cloacas, sometimes called the “Cloacal Kiss”. No penis action though.
No, I guess I had not come across that before (pun intended
). Can’t wait to tell the wife. But poor Big Pidgee. No penis! ![]()
Here are some new photos. After the hot pidgee porn, these are rated PG (for scenes of fecal matter):
Saturday, December 6
Here and here are Marty, rear, 12 days, and Katie, 11 days.
Sunday, December 7
In this shot, you can see their markings pretty well. It looks like Katie, 12 days and on the left here, will look like like father Big Pidgee, while Marty, 13 days, is going to resemble Little Pidgee. You can see their breasts filling out in these. The wife and I refer to this stage as the “tumor stage,” because that’s what it looks like. In fact, with the first batch I was alarmed that maybe they did have some sort of pidgee cancer, but no, it’s just part of the normal growing process.
Here we have a freshly cleaned balcony! In moving the box and returning it, Katie somehow seemed to think Marty was responsible for the upheaval and started nipping at his head, as if to say: “You stupid! You idiot! What are you doing?!” Unfortunately, the parents filled th area with shit again that very night. You can see the bread still in the other end of the flower box, from my ill-conceived attempt to feed Little Pidgee a few weeks ago when Big Pidgee disappeared for a day.
You can see their growing breasts maybe a bit better here.
Monday, December 8
Here they are at ages 13 and 14 days. You can especially see Katie’s Big Pidgee-like feather pattern very well.
We’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon: Big and Little Pidgee have a designated sex area on the balcony. They’ve been doing it a lot this week, and whenever they’re feeling friendly, they always go to the left side of the balcony, the left side as you’re looking out from inside. The flower box with the squabs is on the far right side, and the rails on the far right side are where the parents perch at night now. Last night (Wednesday night) was the first time we’ve seen them being frisky after dark. Usually they just settle in on the rails for the night. But suddenly around 9pm or so, long after dark, we noticed them cooing and preening each other over on the left side. We didn’t actually see the act this time, but they were definitely engaged in heavy petting; we probably just missed it. Then they returned over to the rails. And every time we have seen the act itself, it’s been at about the same spot.
The parents spending a lot of time away in the day now, there’s no Big Pidgee to chase away curious strangers. Sammy’s mate has stopped by a couple of times. We watched yesterday to see what would happen. After looking around the balcony, she started checking out the squabs in the flower box, and little Katie started snapping at her! I went out and chased the stranger away after that, she was obviously upsetting the squabs. Have not seen her with Sammy lately, but now we noticed her wing patterns are the same as Big Pidgee’s and are wondering if she’s a relative. Hope Sammy’s not fooling around with his aunt or something!
And with both parents here at night now, the right side of the balcony is covered with shit again already. It’s like we never even cleaned it a few days ago.
I give you the inaugural Thailand Grand Pigeon Race, held yesterday (Friday). Chiang Mai to Bangkok, 575 kilometers (about 345 miles). No, we did not participate.
Marty and Katie are 19 and 18 days old, respectively, today (Saturday). They can stand up for long periods. Last night, Marty actually ventured out of the nest to the other side of the flower box, the first time for either one. He hunkered down among the bread crumbs that are still there but apparently missed his sister and the security of the nest and so returned there. We expect them to hop out of the box sometime next week. They’re looking like real little pigeons now, albeit shaped rather like little torpedoes or American footballs. Marty’s tail looks like a little brush. Will take more photos after the next balcony cleaning this weekend.
The parents have been having sex all week long, always in their designated sex area.
Another thing we’ve noticed with squabs. At about age 1 week, they’ll try raising up and snapping at us when we get too close, apparently thinking we’re invading monsters. They probably could not imagine anything that looked like us while they were still in the egg. They outgrow that at about 2 weeks, apparently finally getting used to us and deciding maybe we’re not here to eat them ater all. Then they just lay there and stare at us.
How sad that they lose so many pigeons.
I’m glad you didn’t participate!
Thanks for the new updates!
Hopefully, most of the missing just made a break for freedom. The Great Pigeon Escape.
Did you ever get more of the info/pics back to Pigeon Watch? I remember you said they were interested in your stuff.
Yes, I did send them something, but I never heard back from them, and their website’s not changed since. Been meaning to send them a note about the current batch of squabs but have not gotten around to it.
New photos!
This one is from this past Tuesday, the 9th. Katie, left, is 2 weeks old, and Marty, seen having a snooze, is 15 days.
Three from Wednesday, with Katie at 15 days and Marty 16 days. In this one, Katie especially is looking quite punk. And another one. And now it’s nap time.
This one from Friday, with Marty, front, aged 18 days and Katie 17 days. You can see now how much Marty is resembling Little Pidgee and Katie Big Pidgee; maybe we’ve got their genders mixed up!
And now today (Sunday), or cleaning day. Here, here, here and here are the squabs, aged 19 and 20 days now, after I moved their flower box to clean their area. In this one, you can see mother Little Pidgee in the background past the squabs, on a window frame below. In fact, here are all four: The squabs in their flower box and both parents hanging around trying to figure out just what we’re doing to their squabs. (They actually got up to some heavy kissing while there; we were taking up their designated sex area.) And finally, here they are moved back; you can see that Katie is even developing Big Pidgee’s light white “mask” on the sides of her face.
While we were cleaning, the squabs, once they decided we weren’t about to eat them, seemed exceptionally curious about what we were doing. Both ventured to the far side of the flower box a time or two. I think they’ll be hopping out of the box within the week.
Looks like we’ll be having a fifth batch of eggs. Twice this morning (Monday morning), Big Pidgee has showed up with a fresh twig in his beak. He flew away with it when he saw me. When the squabs are very young or even still eggs, the parents will hold their ground more, but once the squabs are older they are more skittish about us. We really will have to change the flower box after this batch leaves, though; it’s getting pretty gross inside. Not sure how they’re going to arange the new nest anyway with the squabs still in it.
Little Pidgee spent her first night away since laying the eggs for the present batch. Usually she starts staying away at night once the squabs are about a week or so, but this time she’s stayed longer, presumably because Big Pidgee changed his habit and began sleepibng here at night. Poor Big Pidgee! I think he felt “in the mood” yesterday evening, as close to dark he stood waiting in the designated sex area. Once it became very dark, he seemed to decide his woman was not going to appear and then went over to the rails where he sleeps at night. Not seen her this morning, but she was here briefly late yesterday afternoon during and immediately after the balcony cleaning, so I don’t think anything untoward has happened to her.
