We Have Pigeon Eggs

Quick update to a moment ago: Just fed both Henry and Geri.

I’m almost afraid to ask, but how is Little Chewed up Guy?

So how is that family tree coming, promised by some thread-watchers?

The Little Chewed Up Guy is fine. His feathers finally smoothed out, but we can still recognize him by a silvery spot on his lower back.

I’m not sure a family tree will be possible. It would involve too much guesswork. We do know that Ladyboy is Henry’s daughter, his and I think it was Maggie’s. And Pinky is Big Red and Mint’s.

Found the software. Now I have to load it. Dang, but it takes me forever to get something done. :frowning:

There’s a Sammy – which is a darkish gray with dark speckled pattern, named after the first one that hatched here and we named Sammy – we call Sticky-Tail Sammy because he has something stuck to his tail feathers. Like other feathers. Been stuck like there for weeks, don’t know what he got into to make it like that. Feathers or a bunch of fuzz, stuck to the end of the tail and hanging off. He stayed here a couple of nights ago. Put food out for him to find in the morning. He’s been back since but not stayed here again.

This morning, a brand new baby. White with some black speckles. Seems related to a certain Henry. Hmmm. Cute little guy. Very, very tiny. Must have just left the nest. Discovered the water dish and took a bath. What attracts them to the water right off the bat like that? And they seem to stop going for baths so much when they grow older.

Software loaded and will try to get those photos soon. But meanwhile, Sticky-Tail Sammy has slept here the past two nights in a row, making three nights total in the past week. He seems to like us. Still has stuff stuck to his tail. I tried leaving some food out for his breakfast in the morning, but I noticed that what happens is other pigeons show up at the crack of dawn, chase Sammy away and eat the food themselves. So we just make sure to change the water at night, but carefully so as not to frighten him. He’s big, but we think still young.

Henry’s been HUNGRY today. I think he has babies to feed.

Well he COULD have babies at your place, darn him!

I shall passyour concerns on to him at the earliest opportunity.

Sticky-Tail Sammy is sleeping here every night now. Just left after a third night in a row, the fourth this week. Little guy seems lonely.

We were out all day Saturday and returned home just after dark. No Sticky-Tail Sammy. So we went about our business and after a while noticed he’s out there! He definitely was not before. I’d stuck my head out and looked. Not behind a pot or anything. But then he shows up after dark. The guy above us is away now, and we’re wondering if Sammy was on his balcony and flew down when he noticed lights coming from our place. Put a little food out and he ate it.

So it looks like we may have another resident pigeon. Maybe Sammy will find a mate and build a nest. He doesn’t seem crippled but has a problem hopping up onto the green concrete border of the balcony. Can’t quite seem to get the hang of it and stumbles or bashes his head on the railing above. His body is a pretty big size, but his eyes are still the black ones of the young, they’ve not turned orange yet.

I really need to save this link for our local chapter of the Audubon Society. Pigeons get jokes made about them, but this long term observation of a single species, in a single place, is really neat.

P.S. We need to set up a dating service for Sammy, so we can get some balcony action.

Pinky is still single. Maybe they can get together. But there’s still a lot of sex going on out there, with pidgees stopping by all the time to use the balcony as a short-time hotel.

I caved. I put out seeds on the deck. No takers yet.

Try a couple of little piles rather than scattering them all out. Something that’s readily noticeable.

Almost 10:30pm Sunday night here, and Sticky-Tail Sammy is out there looking all fluffed up and cozy. But I think we’ll have to call him Broken-Tail Sammy instead, as a (relatively) close examination of his tail reveals that maybe it’s not something stuck to the tail, but rather the very end sort of chewed on or something. Looking a bit ragged all along the edge. Nothing too serious-looking though. Wonder what happened. Makes me think of Big Red’s close shave. (Big Red reappeared today after another of his mysterious absences. Tail’s still there.) Will have to try and take a photo of Sammy’s tail.

So I finally got the photos uploaded to the camera. Now I have to sort through and select which ones to upload. Patience, coming soon.

That little Sammy who was staying here at night has disappeared. We hope he’s okay but cannot shake the feeling that they tend to start staying here at night if they feel The End Is Near. He seemed okay despite his damaged tail. But he kept hanging around even in the daytime. Gone for about a week now. :frowning:

New babies have been showing up, most of them white to some extent. One who’s becoming a regular is the whitest one we’ve seen so far, white white, pure white, except for a small black speck on its left throat. We’ve named it Snowflake. May belong to Big Red and Mint.

Henry and Geri are as hungry as ever. We have to turn them down a lot in the morning until the coast is clear, feeding themmainly in the afternoon. Geri showed up hurt a few days ago. May have been in a fight. Limping badly, plus one big wing feather was pulled almost al the way out and had a spot of blood on the base. But she recovered quickly in a day or two and no longer limps. The big feather is still turned backward though.

Good Lord, it’s like a little feathered soap opera!

Can’t wait for the pictures and thanks for the update.

And now I give you the long-promised photos, ranging in time from November 23-January 21.

Henry orders a meal.

Henry and Geri eat. Look at Henry go! His head’s just a blur. You can see Geri’s “clown face” pretty well here. Note the white “streak” between her eye and the dark patch or “clown makeup” around her mouth.

Pinkie looking cute as ever. An absolutely beautiful little girl. She’s actually not pure white though. There are a couple of small light-tan patches on her upper back. Snowflake, a new white one, is even whiter. No picture of her yet though.

Geri’s daughter, with Mom in foreground. At least, we’re pretty sure she belongs to Henry and Geri. Takes after Mom. She came here for a few days, then disappeared. Her brother Funny Face still comes around.

Henry bows before me. Well, actually he’s eating while ignoring me.

Henry and daughter Ladyboy. She’s been coming around for almost 1-1/2 years now. Henry’s first offspring that we know of.

The Daughter again. Really resembles Geri.

Funny Face snoozes here and here, in the dining-room window. It’s New Year’s Day, so perhaps he had a big night. This is The Daughter’s brother. at least, I think he is. There may be two or even three we’ve been calling Funny Face thinking they’re all the same.

Henry peers in.

Baby and bath. This one was in and out of the water dish. Disappeared after that day, I think the only appearance.

Geri eats. I mentioned she’d been in a fight a day or so before this photo was taken. About the middle of her right wing is the large overturned feather I noted, but it’s not that evident in this shot. It’s the light streak mid-wing. She’s doing fine now, but the feather is still turned. The shaft must be broken, and it’s not detached yet.

These are all in a new folder I’ve opened for this year called Pigeons 2012, although the photos start from November 23, 2011.

Still more babies showing up. Two or maybe three today alone, but I’ve not taken photos of them yet. One looks like Geri and resembles the old Marble Face. I surprised that one taking a bath this morning. What is it about young pidgees that prompt them to take a bath, then they seem to forget it as they get older? Two others may actually be only, but whether it was one or two, the color was white with a few black dots.

In other news, there’s been increased activity on the balcony below us in the mornings, causing us to be extra careful about feedings that time of day. Could be good overall, as we’re still getting too large a crowd and are having to turn Henry and Geri down more rather than letting them get into fights over food. Late afternoon is the best feeding time now.

No sign of Charlie for a few weeks now.

I like all the pidgees but I think Henry is still my favorite to look at. Thanks for posting these pics!

Wow, Pinkie is a knock out! You and your wife really are the greatest for the pidgees, and for keeping us up to date with the feathered drama.

Thank you!

You’re welcome. Henry is indeed the king, and he seems to sense this. Even if we have to squirt water at an out-and-out bully like Big Pretty One to stop fights, while other pidgees will start up and fly away in fright, Henry just ignores it and keeps on eating. He knows he’s special.

We’re a bit curious about Pinkie. Maybe she’s still too young, but she doesn’t seem interested in finding a mate. We think Snowflake may also have come from Big Red and Mint, same as Pinkie. Those two produce some beautiful babies.

I’m afraid it’s not looking good for poor little Mint, who is Big Red’s mate and Pinkie’s mother. She was fine until this past Saturday. But that morning, she was breathing heavily and her eyes kept sort of closing. She seemed listless enough that I thought maybe I could catch her, but when I tried, she flew away. Not seen again. We fear the worst. Big Red is having one of his regular disappearances; don’t know what he’ll think when he returns again and Mint is gone. :frowning:

The happy news is that two new babies have shown up who seem to belong to Henry and Geri. And a little baby black pidgee – solid black like the crows in the neighborhood. Hmmm, I wonder …
