We’ll soon start running Google text ads on the SDMB

Now that you’ve made mention of them, they’ll always be at the bottom of this thread. Way to go.

Anyway, back on topic. I think that this is a fine idea. We probably should have tried this before p2p.

Putting them below the Quick Reply box will kind of defeat the purpose, dontcha think? The whole point is for them to be seen.

Those are the same ones I’ve seen at the bottom of EVERY thread. Google doesn’t seem to be picking up on the keywords very well. I wonder if it’s because the pages are dynamically generated or whatever.

Though as Ed said, the Cheese thread’s ads ARE relevant. Maybe it just goes by the title?

Yeah, but that “Sponsored Links” line still bugs me . . .

'Zactly.

Why is it that SDMB subscribers were not even given a chance for input? Where we? Maybe we would have paid a little more to keep out the ads. When Mad Magazine went commercial I cancelled my subscription.

Any cookies/tracking going on here that we should know about?

True, that’s why I figured there was no chance of that happening. They honestly don’t really bother me (aside from the aforementioned Katrina ad).

The ad-blocking issue is interesting and I’d like to be assured that we can openly discuss such methods, whether it involves the SDMBs ads or not. I know that Certain Persons are very touchy about some topics and close threads discussing those topics.

Basically, I don’t want someone to get into a hissy fit if I mention how to modify a hosts file to block something if someone perceives that I’m undermining the SDMB’s financial stream.

Does this mean it’ll be cheaper to renew next year?

Yeah, didn’t think so.

I remember when we had the temp boards, the admins got really pissed if someone had pop-up blockers. I hope to hell they’re not going to get mad this time.

Another question: how will this affect performance of the board? It’s running extremely slow tonight; whether that’s a coincidence, I don’t know.

Sorry 'bout the double post-I don’t know how that happened.

funking around with the text mine.
Should have hooked up this deal before Hal Briston’s buddy worked his magic. Over 12,000 page views. Cha-ching!

I hope they don’t expect me to turn off adblocking - or even just adblocking for those ubiquitous Google ads - just for them. I mean, what - I have to tolerate Google ads on a thousand websites just to see an ad I’ll never click on to support a website I already pay for?

This is the first website I’ve ever visited where you still get a bunch of advertising after you’ve paid to be a member.

The usual trend is to offset the cost of those who don’t pay for membership by showing ads to those who don’t pay for membership.

So, what exactly did we pay for again?

The decision to not resubscribe keeps getting easier. I do eagerly await the “no complaining about the ads,” rule, and the subsequent banning of paid members who do so. Interesting business model.

Yep.

Unclear. Once again, it has been made clear that the money will not be used to improve the service - though no doubt that won’t stop the asskissing brigade from popping up with, “I don’t mind them showing ads on my computer since it’ll make the SDMB better.” Just preemptively - as the administration has already made clear, no it won’t.

There is a difference between “may not” and “will not.”
