I agree with the OP.
I’m so slow to catch these things, sometimes, that I only just now noticed this thread and chime in with my minority support.
So I take it that you would like the edit window to be two years. Correct?
I’ve come to like the shorter edit windows (zombies or not). It forces me to think of the words I choose and use them with more care. And given how quick some responses are made, a longer window could cause a lot of “I meant to say – didn’t you read my edited post?” exchanges. I catch those on other boards and find them detrimental to the kinds of discussions we have here in say GD or Elections.
At a minimum.
I use two forums frequently: The Student Room, and Digital Spy. On The Student Room, there is no limit to the window for editing; you can edit posts weeks after they are originally posted. This is good if you spot a mistake, however, it can be very disruptive.
Digital Spy has either a 10 or 15 minute edit window - after 15 minutes, you can’t edit. That’s enough time to edit any errors, or make any required adjustments to your post.
5 minutes is, in my humble opinion, far too short and it is a shame that such short edit times are imposed. You might as well not have an edit function at all if you’re going to limit people to 5 minutes! :smack:
We didn’t. For a great many years you couldn’t edit at all and it stayed that way for a long time. The five minute rule was a compromise, to finally give posters at least a little something.
So…five minutes is much better than what it used to be.
Five minutes is plenty of time to correct spelting or grammering mistakes … and enough time to perform any clarificationing needed. Where I typically get caught is trying to add on to what I posted, in which case I just simply copy/paste into a new post.
I understand the need for the edit window, I just fail at it. It can take me hours to compose a post (which is embarrassing in and of itself) and I always find something not right with it.
… and I’ve always found moderators more than happy to make edits for obviously gross errors … like replacing “did” with “didn’t” … “3.14” for pi instead of “8.46” … etc etc etc …
My initial reaction was right on.
Then I had another thought. “I remember when we didn’t have internet at all, so I’m eternally grateful for my 56k dialup connection.” Just because what we have beats the pants off of having nothing doesn’t mean it can’t ever be improved upon.
The board seems to run pretty well these days, but I remember a few times when the hamsters were spazzing out and sometimes I couldn’t even reload the thread and see my post then click edit and get that loaded, then edit and attempt to submit it before the 5 mins had expired.
edit: oh brains, I didn’t brains it was a brainsing zombie.
