This is the very argument that has convinced me that many leaders on the right have just plum lost their minds.
No, the maximum number of people do not always hate us to the maximum amount. People like Giuliani can deny it all they want: the fact is, plenty of people would have been perfectly willing to just sit at home quietly hating America but never doing anything about it, or not hating America at all. There are strategies that motivate these people to become more radical, and more and more people to support their radicalism, and their are strategies that help avoid this happening.
Leaders on the right seem to deny this tradeoff and scream bloody murder to anyone who points it out. The result is that they don’t seem to care at all about this possibility, and the results are predictable, even if they babble on about how admitting it is just “blaming America.”
You might find this hard to believe, but the liberal agenda and that of radical Islam do not really intersect at too many points. Liberals are all about the gay marriage and the boobies on TV and free tofu and pictures of Che for the masses. Life under the Taliban would a little too close to, well, life under the Pat Robertson presidency for your average liberal.
On a related note, I had no idea that Ann Coulter had put out picture books. Good on her!
I doubt that our invasion of Iraq caused ObL to hate us any more than he already did, but it allowed him to spread that hatred much more easily. I like to cite this 2002 poll to remind people that Americans were generally not on board with Bush in the run-up to the war. With respect to this thread, note that:
I’m guessing a similar poll today would be roughly the same for the last figure, but the 32% saying it would make no difference would have moved over in the “increase” column.
How do you figure? It was the conservatives like you that did Iran a big favor by knocking off both of their arch-enemies, the Taliban and Saddam, leaving weak failed states for the Axis of Evil to move into. It looks to me like you are the one advancing the cause of Islamic extremism.
No, more like the extreme right. They want the War on Terra to go on forever, to keep the sheeple so scared they will give up all their freedom for the promise of security. Read your history, it has been repeated by the worst depots since time immemorial
I’m still curious as to how you achieve this. Kill each and every last one of them? How? How do you identify them? There’s enough animosity over there that you could continually seek them out for decades on end destroying them but you’d still have new ones popping up all the time. And even as you have acknowledged, it only takes a handful to cause a 9/11. It’s like saying that someday we will achieve victory on crime in America. You won’t. You can’t. All you can do is attempt to control it. We do that here with a police force that is here to stay forever. Nobody dreams of the day when we no longer need police on the streets because we achieved victory in the war on crime.
So what do we do? Stay in Iraq indefinately? That seems to be the plan right now. Or at least until Dubya is out of office. Then it becomes somebody else’s problem right?
Face it. Dubya put us in a no-win situation and he knows it. He has no solution. He knows there is no such thing as a ‘victory’. He’s just passing time until he can retire on his ranch.
I have to cite a source that says nobody ever realistically suggested surrendering to communists or Al Qaida? While I’m at it, why don’t I find a source that denies the myth that my mother is a robot in disguise from Neptune named H326.
It’s not just dubya, it’s the western world. I don’t know if we’ll have to ‘kill each and last one of them’. We didn’t have to with communism or naziism for them to stop threatening to take over the world. Religion though, is a bigger problem.
“Fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them here” has always been an exceedingly stupid strategy.
In order for a defense to work, it has to actually interfere with the ability of the enemy to attack you. Our continued involvement in Iraq does NOTHING to interfere with Al Qaeda’s ability to strike the United States mainland.
It’s like the old joke about the guy who loses his wallet on a dark street and walks half a block to look for it under a streetlight where the light is better. Or the Maginot Line – which would have worked GREAT if the Nazis hadn’t just gone around it.
Hooray, we’re being led by another Marshal Pétain!
I will say that it is a shame we bailed out on Vietnam… We at least held South Korea up, and South Vietnam should’ve been the same. I hope we don’t repeat that this time.
How exactly, are the Islamicists going to take over the world? Sure they can harass us and kill us in drib and drabs, but the Islamic world does not possess the political cohesion or industrial base to compete on the world stage as anything more than a nuisance. Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were both major powers able to project serious military strength well beyond their borders. To equate them with the threat posed by a handful of religious nut-jobs is beyond silly.
We didn’t know how the cold war would end then. And… You didn’t live there. I know people that fled. A lot didn’t make it when the communists poured in.
It would’ve been worth it to save South Vietnam and turn it into another South Korea… And kept it free.
But no, thanks to your mindset, we cut and run and they died and fell to a dead-end system. Same as your type wants to do with jihadist islam in Iraq now. History repeating itself.
