We need to go destroy this web site- not really, but... you know... in our minds

I started a thread about ads on the internet recently, and good points were made about how the ‘cheaters’ (i.e. pop up ads that have fake close-out Xs in the corners, and fake warning messages, etc.) were ruining it for those who have and rely upon legitimate ads on the web, b/c of those of us who use <ahem> legit ad-blockers.

Anywhoo, I agree- I want to support the legit ads w/o supporting the cheaters if that were possible- but it ain’t, b/c, as was pointed out, starting lawsuits against these companies (while completely justified and possible), would ultimately do nothing and change none of it. We can’t stop it, it’s here for good.

But a certain one of these scammers has made themselves stand out w/ a certain program on Limewire (at least, that’s the download site I’m using), and I’m here to tell you about them. Their site is called http://efreeclub.com/ , and I may have picked up a piece of spyware from them or something (even though I have the proper protection programs), b/c whenever I search for something on Limewire, something w/ the name of what I want appears at the top of the screen along w/ the legit files. This file is a 30 sec. ad for the website, which always has 147.1 KB, yet it always disguises itself by naming itself whatever it is I’m searching for, appearing at the top of the results, and it’s a WMA file (even though the ad is just a pic on the screen w/ audio for 30 sec.).

This HAS to be illegal. I can’t advocate members on SD doing anything in the guise of retribution- not that you’d stick your neck out for me like that anyways :D- I’m just saying that these fucks should be fucking taken out and… taken off the internet. That’s it; they should lose their business licenses for this shit.

I’m going to email them about this, and if they don’t respond (typical company bullshit in my experience , fuckers) I’m going to start a petition on this board. Unless the mods say otherwise- mods, I’m asking you, is this allowed?- I’ll get as many thousands of you as possible to inundate their email w/ legitimate emails as possible about their error until they stop.

I’m guessing no.

So anyways, I’m warning you- if you use downloading services, esp. Limewire- am I allowed to advocate this, mods?- don’t download anything at the top w/ the exact name and 147.1 KB. And if you’ve experienced this, come help me.

Pit Rules say

Don’t post addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, or other methods of contact in order to facilitate campaigns for or against an issue. Do not urge other people to look up such information and contact the subjects, either. This has always been our policy all over the SDMB, but apparently some people don’t know about it, or don’t think it applies in the Pit. It does.

Pretty much common sense- but is it legal to inundate email of businesses w/ legitimate protesting emails?

No, huh? :stuck_out_tongue:

You guessed right. We don’t allow people to coordinate email campaigns from the boards. In the future, it would be greatly appreciated if you could email the mods before starting a thread you believe to be potentially against the rules.

We don’t allow detailed discussions on how to use P2P services to download files. This includes how to avoid problems while doing so. I know, I know, I’m sure you were downloading public domain footage of bunnies nuzzling baby gorillas, but the powers that be have decided that enough P2P usage is geared toward violating copyright that we have to disallow all such discussions.
