I loved them both. Neither of them were world-changers, but I found both of them quite entertaining. “2012” was definitely a movie to see on a large screen - what a ride, man! The story was average, no big surprises, but the special effects - woohoo!
“Surrogates” was the closest thing to a real science fiction movie I’ve seen in a long time. It was quite nicely done - Bruce Willis did a very good job. He really is in his element as the reluctant action hero.
Have you seen either of them? Anything else moderately new you’ve seen and want to recommend/warn us against (except “Avatar” - it gets its own threads).
I’ve been seeing commercials for *Surrogates *on TV lately, and it’s weird… they’re completely downplaying the sci-fi elements. It looks like just some sort of standard conspiracy theory/mystery movie.
I’ve been a hardcore sci-fi fan for decades, and I was satisfied with the level of sci-fi in it. I just went and looked up who wrote the original book - it’s from a comic book, apparently. I wouldn’t have been surprised to see it was a real sci-fi author (I can’t put my finger on which one - Philip K. Dick, maybe).
Saw “Legion” this past weekend. It was what you’d expect - silliness. Fun way to pass the time, but wait for the DVD.
Saw “Book of Eli” last weekend. I enjoyed it, but others didn’t, and there’s a thread on it in Cafe Society (with some major spoilers).
Saw “Sherlock Holmes” the week before that, and it was HILARIOUS. I’m not sure that the director intended it to be that way, though. There were some good points, and it’s definitely not a traditional portrayal.
Saw “2012” (tsunamis over the Himalayas!) and “Avatar,” both of which have their own threads.
Want to see:
Edge of Darkness
Wolfman
Daybreakers
Surrogates
I just went out to spend my birthday money on Blu-ray movies, and picked up Surrogates because it was on sale (also the first and third Terminators, which I’ve seen many times). I remember having wanted to see Surrogates in the theater and missing it, so I hope I’m satisfied with my purchase. I hardly ever buy movies unseen.
