Weather ? - Typhoons in the S Hemsphr

If we have typhoons and hurricanes in the northern hemisphere from June through November, why do we never hear of typhoons or hurricanes in the southern hemisphere from December through May? Are they there and nobody cares or is there some fundamental meteorological difference?

Hi Steve,

I used to do hurricane modelling for a company - mainly for Australia and the Phillipines and rest assured, the southern hemisphere gets PLENTY of cyclones (just another regional name for what we call a hurricane in the US) and they can be quite powerful.

We used to keep an eye on world weather and news and there were lots of stories about cyclones, they just don’t get as much play on the evening news here in the States.

Just ask the residents of Darwin ( in northern Australia ) . They lost their town to a typhoon/cyclone on Christmas Day 1974
